NAMM Wrap Up

Nashville was, as always, a fabulous show.  I was able to network with new people, gained some new friends, and took the Music Authority message on the road.

It was an honor to be a presenter as part of NAMM U this year.  My session was on building customer loyalty.  What my attendees got was a thirty minute walk through of the Music Authority family - our concerts, camps, lessons, social events, and what makes us special.

What I learned was pretty astonishing.  We're the only ones out there doing it like this.  Other stores have culture.  Other stores have camps.  Other stores have lessons and sales.  But no one I met has a program that merges it all together like us.

Since the show, I've been working with a couple of smaller stores in Michigan and Georgia, helping them to start the foundation for what we have.  It's scary and exciting to know our message, our story here at Music Authority is having a positive impact in other parts of the nation.

Our student ambassadors, Christian, Lauren, and Elizabeth met vendors and artists.  They saw parts of the industry not normally open to students.  They may have taken the first steps down a path that could lead to a bright career.  You should ask them about their experiences when you see them next.

And we ordered some cool gear.  A new sunburst, 710e already arrived.  I'm waiting for a limited edition, one you could only buy at the show.  It's going to be a great guitar for someone special.

We went to Rippy's, ate great food, listened to some live music, were honored at the Top 100 Dealers dinner, and came home with new ideas.   (Elizabeth and Lauren made their debut on the stage at the Hard Rock Cafe, too!)

I'm excited to get started.  We want to break some records and make the next year even better than the last.  Get ready, Music Authority Family, there's some exciting things just over the horizon.  And hold on - it's going to be quite the ride!

Adults in Lessons
One Student's Perspective

My name is Alice Lopez and my husband and I signed our boys up for guitar and drumming lessons in the Spring of 2016. The amazing transformation of our boy’s talent and self-esteem have been amazing. These shy and quiet boys are coming out of their shells and ROCKING out big time.

There has also been another transformation that I think is worth sharing. I grew up playing music. I started playing Bagpipes with my Dad when I was 10 years old. Voice lessons followed. I sang in choir all through high school and college. I went on playing the Bagpipes on a highly competitive level with the Atlanta Pipe Band and traveled all throughout the US and Canada. Music of all cultures has been a major influence on my life.

As an adult, motherhood and life have put my music on hold.

In March of 2016, my Dad passed away. His influence on my music was huge. His death had a major impact on me. I realized how much of my life was just going through the motions. I had forgotten about my passion that shaped me as the person I am today.

I started to realize how much I looked forward to taking the boys to their lessons and being surrounded by music. As they got more involved in MA, I wanted to be involved too. I approached Melissa about being able to sing in the Fall show and started taking voice lessons again. I was placed in a band with the song Luckenbach, Texas to sing. I was the only adult in the band. Believe it or not, it was a bit intimating.

Three months of rehearsing with these kids was amazing. I found my voice and worked on my stage confidence. The one crazy thing that was happening to me was that I was healing. Our performance went off without a hitch and we got more views on the YouTube video than any other band in the Fall show! My instructor Brandon and my boys were waiting for me with hugs when I walked off the stage.

I want to encourage all adult students at MA to consider performing in the Fall and Spring shows. Our hard work and talent deserve to be showcased too!

So, at the next big show, please don’t roll your eyes at the adults performing. We are students too. You never know how much these experiences are enhancing our lives.

Thanks to Melissa and Andrew for letting me perform. Thanks to Brandon for teaching and encouraging me. Thanks to my band of kids for being so great!

Music Authority has helped me find my passion and is helping develop one for my boys, Nicholas and Alec, and my husband Fabricio.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Alice Mulligan Lopez

Sign Up for Lessons with Jeff Gray, bass instructor!

Why do you like teaching?  I love teaching because I enjoy passing on the traditions that were passed on to me.  I come from a jazz background and have taken lessons and master classes from the great players in jazz that were more than happy to share their knowledge and wisdom with me.  I feel that If I can do that with my students, than the tradition of music will live on.

What makes you excited about playing music? Music is engrained in my soul.  I have played music since I was a child, piano, and have added many instruments to my repertoire throughout my life.  Music helps me to relax, concentrate, get my art out and groove.  I couldn’t imagine my life without it.  It has also presented many opportunities for me throughout the years.  I have shared the stage with many of my mentors including Brian Setzer, The Stray Cats, Adele, Dick Dale, Mudhoney, and the Presidents of the United States of America, just to name a few.

What’s your favorite food?  My favorite food is a good street taco from a taco truck.  It’s all about the salsa!

Where is your hometown?  My hometown is here in Georgia.  I was raised in Stone Mountain.

Anything else you would like to add?  Keep playing, no matter what.  Let music live in your soul and express itself through your groove.

Music Authority Named One of the Best Music Stores Worldwide

For the third year in a row, Music Authority has been named one of the best music stores worldwide.  Each year, this honor means a little bit more to myself and the staff.

Let me explain why.

Every spring music stores around the world are asked to submit reports to NAMM (The National Association of Music Merchants).  In these reports, we discuss the things we've done in the last year to make our store, our community, and the larger musical community better.  The reports are judged by a blind panel and the top 100 are named.

Each year, I'm not competing against anyone except our best from the previous year.  This award pushes us to be better, more innovative, and engaged in the community.

This year's report covered three topics:

Marketing - growth in adult programming.  We discussed how our adult numbers have tripled in 12 months and Vintage Cab was born.

Online Engagement - social media.  We reported on how giving control of Instagram to our teens has reached more young people, made our content more relevant, and given some of our students opportunities for real world experience running a social network for a musical act.

Music Makes a Difference - breaking down barriers.  We reported on five specific students and what kind of impact music has made in their individual lives.  Each of these students has physical or emotional issues creating barriers to success that Music Authority helped them maneuver through to find confidence and joy in music.

I'm looking forward to the awards ceremony in Nashville this July.  It's an opportunity to network with and learn from the best in the world.

And even more, I'm looking forward to see what the rest of 2017 holds - new ideas, new stories, and new adventures.

Elon Musk said, "When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor."

The first sales rep that ever met with Music Authority, before we were a company, while we were working out of a living room, was a man named Jim Ferrall.  The first day we met him he told us, "Don't open a music store, find a better way to lose a lot a money.  You can't make a living doing this."

He was our sales rep and friend until the day he retired.

And aren't we all glad we didn't listen to him.

Music Authority's Story on the Road

This summer, I have been asked to speak at an industry event about building culture in business.  To talk about how culture creates sustainability in retail and private music lessons.

I was telling a parent about this opportunity and without thinking about it I said, "I'm taking Music Authority's message on the road."

At first, I thought that was a funny way to explain what I was doing, but then I realized it was completely accurate.

Music Authority Family's culture contains a message: embrace all musicians, young and old, with support, positive reinforcement, and experiences.

Your student might take one private lesson each week.  That's okay.  Hopefully you've still experienced the culture.  Someone besides your teacher greets you.  Another students tells your student "good job" after a recital.

Or your child might be in every concert, camp, and band they can sign up for.  You've experienced the group outings, the concerts out of town, and the camaraderie of the larger group.

Music Authority's culture is meant to be supportive of all students, regardless of ability, social-economic status, age, or instrument.  It is a culture that gives back to the community and doesn't leave room for bullies.

What we do is profound.  The long term impact we have on our student's courage, self-confidence, and life paths cannot possibly be measured.

Now imagine if ten other stores in ten other cities had a similar culture.

What kind of global and national impact would making music have?  Like ripples in a pond, these ideas would reach out farther than anyone could see or imagine.  This is the Music Authority message.  This is the story of culture I want to tell.

This isn't my story.  I can't do it alone.  Neither can Louis, Eric, Andrew, Dawn, or any of the other teachers.  This is OUR story.  Yours, mine, the students, Rise's, Eclipse's, and all of the teachers.

I'm looking forward to taking each and everyone of you with me this summer.  Thank you for giving me a story to tell.

The Importance of Guitar Maintenance

Guitars need love and attention.  You have to feed them, care for them, put them to bed, and tuck them in.

And once in a while, you need to change the strings (approximately every 90 days - sooner if you're playing it more than thirty minutes or so a day).  Think of it this way - strings should be shiny.  If they're dull and tarnished, they need to be changed.

And every once in a while you need to have a set up.

What's a set up?

A set up adjusts the neck and makes your instrument play better.  Over time, a wooden guitar will warp and bend.  You will need to adjust that neck or the warping will become permanent and your guitar will be hard to play.

You should have a set up if you live in Georgia every 6-8 months.
Music Lessons - Not Just for Kids

Studies show that adults who participate in music lessons have lower chances of developing dementia and better cognitive function later in life.  In 2016, Music Authority set out to engage our adult customers in order to grow our adult lessons program.
Since Music Authority already had an established Rock Band program for youth, we decided to see if it would work for adults, too.  The hope was that a regularly performing adult Music Authority band would show the community what adult students at Music Authority can accomplish.
                Vintage Cab was born.
Vintage Cab’s first gig was on May 1, 2016 (six weeks after their first rehearsal) at Relay for Life in Dawsonville.  They play a consistent schedule of gigs in and around Cumming.  Videos and photos are posted to social media.  Concert dates are announced to the Music Authority Family to draw out a crowd.
So have adult lesson numbers gone up?
Take a look at these statistics.  On March 1 of 2016, there were 27 adult students enrolled at Music Authority.  As of March 1, 2017, that number had grown to 63 students.  The Spring Concert in 2016 had one adult band and a total of 6 adult students performing.  This year’s Spring Concert had 22 adult performers showing off their skills alongside youth.
If you've always thought about taking lessons, you're not alone.  Join 63 of your friends in lessons at Music Authority.  Maybe we can even find you a spot at the same time your child is already here!

Rock Camp is one of the highlights of the summer at Music Authority.  Campers are placed in a band, learn music, and perform in a concert on Friday night at The Warehouse.  Music Authority's camp focuses on quality of education, complex songs, and challenging every student to play beyond their boundaries.

Rock Camp, Jr. provides the same experience for the younger student in a less intense environment.  The camp day is shorter (designed for younger attention spans) and the concert is held in the Backroom at Music Authority.

Contact the front desk at 770-886-9066 for more information or to sign up.

Space is limited and some instruments are already full, so don't wait!
Music Authority Family students made the front page of the news on April 16.  They collected almost 5,000 candy filled eggs to give to economically challenged families in Forsyth County - just in time for Easter.
Sign Up for Brass Lessons with Nick Dixon!
Music Authority Instructor Nick Dixon – Brass:

Why do you like teaching?  Teaching is a great opportunity to share a passion for music which allows the student and the teacher to grow as individuals.  Music changes the way someone experiences life and is an art form that enables expression through the good and hard times that one experiences in life.

What makes you excited about playing music?  Music is a chance to escape from what is troubling.  It can be used to build confidence to learn new skills.

What’s your favorite food?  Mediterranean

Where is your hometown?  Atlanta, Georgia

Coffeeshop - A New Class

Coffeeshop is a new class offered by Matt Karb in June and July.

(Generally one singer with one guitarist.)  The goal of the class will be to network with other musicians, create the beginning to a song catalogue, and to hopefully gain enough confidence to go out and perform.

The Importance of Consistency

It takes less time to forget a new concept than it does to learn it.

What a straightforward idea.  Unfortunately, when the summer months arrive, we often forget.  We think about spending time at the pool, on vacation to Florida, or "just relaxing" at home.

The guitar gets put into a corner, the piano remains silent, and the clarinet collects dust on top of the desk.

Don't forget about music over the summer!

Staying in lessons over the summer is important - the consistency of lessons will prevent your student from losing ground.  They'll be able to learn faster and more complex concepts when they don't have to share study time with math and reading assignments.

And most importantly, your student will continue to challenge their mind over the summer months.  By continuing lessons, students will engage their brain (and all important muscle memory), which will make them more effective when they return to school in the fall.

Music is an investment.  You've invested your time and finances over the last several months or years in lessons.  Less than 7% of students who "drop for the summer" actually return, even the most excited musicians will find other activities.  Don't lose the investment you've already made.

So don't drop for the summer!  Talk to Anastasia about your scheduling woes - she'll be happy to move your lessons around to make time for those vacations and days at the park.  The Music Authority schedule tends to be more flexible over the summer.  Take advantage and don't let your child forget their musical lessons.

ESP Bass Guitars

Pick up a new instrument for the summer!  Don't waste away all that musical knowledge you've worked for - stretch your mind and try something new!

Music Authority's shows and camps are always looking for bass players.  Add diversity to the instruments you know.

Why Your Next Guitar Should be an Electric Acoustic

When most students start guitar lessons, parents are looking for an affordable guitar that will help the student be successful without breaking the bank.  Many new students walk home with an entry level acoustic guitar that will start them on their path to musical stardom.

After the beginning student has proven themselves (or as many parents say, now that I know they're going to stick with it), they begin looking at step up instruments.

Each student should invest in a nice acoustic electric.  Many great performance opportunities require an electric acoustic.  Open Mic Nights.  Some songs in Spring and Fall Shows.  Recitals.  Go to Music Authority's YouTube channel and watch "Seven Bridges Road" from Chase the Sun.

Some songs just need to have that Acoustic Electric guitar to sound amazing.

An Acoustic Electric doesn't need to be expensive.  If you're not sure what you're looking for, come see one of our sales staff.  They'll be happy to help.  Let them know you're thinking about an acoustic with electronics and what your budget it.  They'll find you the right solution for your needs.

And then you'll be all set up for the summer musical season!
Preston Kerr - New Town, New People

Preston Kerr’s house was where all the kids wanted to hang out.  He had the pool, the great neighborhood with all the kids, and fantastic parents who loved having a dozen kids over.
But all of that was in Texas.  A move across country brought Preston’s family to Cumming, Georgia, just north of Atlanta.
Preston, age 10, started lessons at Music Authority in January 2016.  He signed up for Rock Camp over the summer and then joined Music Authority’s Fearless in January 2017.  Fearless, a Rock Ensemble that plays Pop/Punk music, is taking Preston a step closer to his dreams of being a professional musician.
“He doesn’t want to play video games any more,” his dad, Gary, tells us.  “When his friends want to play video games, he’ll sit behind them playing guitar.”
Preston is quickly establishing a group of friends at Music Authority.  He frequently sits in other bands rehearsals, helps assist musical directors by quickly pulling up songs on his phone, picks up after rehearsals, and is generally helpful to any older student who asks.
About Music Authority, Preston’s mom Debra says, “We moved here a year ago from a community in Texas that we loved and were deeply established.  Preston always played sports and had a large network of friends but his passion has always been music.  Leaving that network has been extremely difficult, especially for Preston.  As he has gotten older and more dedicated to his music that passion has set him apart from new classmates, as they do not get it.  Finding Music Authority is the best thing that could have happened to our son and in return our whole family.  For the first time EVER Preston is around other kids (and adults) who get him and his love of music, giving him a place where he fits in.  He tells us daily how he could live there and that these are his people.  We have always been in an environment where even the parents are extremely competitive, it is so refreshing to be in a place that is supportive of everyone and wants every child to succeed.  Melissa and Andrew have done an outstanding job of creating an inclusive network that has become a second family with “older cousins” that mentor the next generation. “Aunts/Uncles” who truly want the best for these kids, giving them a safe place to land.  “Parents” who help prepare “their children” for the future no matter where their music takes them.  Because of all of this, I have finally begun to feel as if Cumming is a place that we can call home and my son can have friends and role models that share his passion.”
Guitars and Keys Needed for Rock Camp!

Session 1 - Punk Revolution
June 5 - 9

Session 2 - Rock Camp, Jr.

Session 3 - British Invasion

Sign Up for Bass Lessons with Jeff Gray!

Music Authority Instructor Jeff Gray - Bass:

Available Times (as of March 30):

A Place For Everyone

"Music Authority gave my child somewhere to feel like he belongs."

I hear this sentiment frequently.  It comes from parents who have moved from far away: their children are building a new social network of friends.  From the parents of children who don't do well in sports or school.  I've heard it from home school parents who's children's social interactions are limited.  And I've heard it from parents who's child excels in sports but doesn't have a school friend group that understand music.

Or even from the adult who's spent their life at a "real job" and now is trying to figure out the more important parts of life - who am I?

Sometimes I liken Music Authority to the "Island of Misfit Toys" from the 1964 claymation Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie.  We strive to be a place for everyone - a safe place for musicians to stretch their wings (even if you're a rag doll with abandonment issues or a cowboy who prefers to ride an ostrich).

The secret behind this magic is in each other.  Music Authority students are accepting of each other.  They're supportive of each other.  They cheer each other on and hug each other when things go wrong.

I'm glad Music Authority is special place to so many of you.  I'm grateful you trust us with your children and yourselves.  And I'm grateful to be a misfit toy - someone who might see life a little different than everyone else, who walks to the beat of a different drummer, and who isn't afraid to let my voice be heard.

I hope you all have the opportunity to be misfit toy.

We don't vote toys off the island here.  Because we're all misfits on this musical journey together.

Music Authority Runs for CASA - Battle of the Bass Players

On February 25, members of the Music Authority family participated in the CASA of Forsyth County Superhero 5k.  They met bright and early at Fowler Park, despite the cold morning, and had a fun time supporting a great cause.

In the Battle of the Bass Players (bass players from three of our six bands ran), Harrison Block of Rise won out.  Not only did he have a better time than Kaitlyn Lahr (Eclipse) and Jackson Warren (Transcend), he had the second best time in his age group.  (Jackson gets an honorable mention, he was fourth in his age bracket.)

Also joining them were Preston Kerr (Fearless) and Susan Papesh (Vintage Cab) along with their families.  Melissa Loggins, a member of the CASA Board of Directors, didn't run but helped with the event.

The big question is where were the other bass players - Christian Strandquist (Fearless), Elizabeth Sherlock (Unveiled), and Andrew Loggins (Vintage Cab)?  Next year, we want to see the full match up!

"This! This is Music Authority Family. These kids range in age from 7th to 12th grades and I can name them all and at least one parent....all because they love making music and they have parents who are their biggest supporters. These kids support each other everyday. #musicauthorityfamily"

One of our Music Authority parent's posted this message with the photo below on social media after a Backroom concert on January 28, 2017.  The sentiment sums up the meaning of "Music Authority Family," providing a place for young musicians to spread their wings, make friends, and build healthy relationships.

The students in the photos attend Central Forsyth High School, South Forsyth High School, homeschool, Riverwatch Middle, North Forsyth High School, and North Forsyth Middle School - quite the diverse line up.

A Musical Community

Music Authority has become a stable part of the musical world within Forsyth County over the past fifteen years.  Over those years, our mission and purpose has changed.  For a long time, as a new business, we were focused on just finding ways to stay open.  But now, we're able to put time and effort into what we truly want: to build a better musical community in Forsyth County.

Our county is growing fast.  There are countless outlets for music - from school bands and choirs to church musical programs to schools like Music Authority and groups like The Bel Canto Singers.  We all struggle with the same things - how can we get patrons to our concerts?  How do we let the community know we're accepting new singers/guitarists/drummers?

How do we make our musical community better?

Throughout 2017, Music Authority hopes to build bridges and better support the musical community at large.  Is your child involved in a musical activity?  School musical?  Choir concert?  Band concert?  Let us know!

Together, we can build a better musical future for all of Forsyth County!

A HUGE Thank You to Anastasia
We want to give Anastasia a huge thank you this holiday season.  It's not easy keeping up with teachers, students, and parents but Anastasia does an amazing job.  She keeps track of who's here and who's not, sorts out accounting issues, and tracks down absences, credits, and make ups.

Thank you, Anastasia!
Music Authority's five bands played for a packed house at Green's Tavern in Flowery Branch on November 13.  It was standing room only in the restaurant that features live music and great food.

The opportunity to play gigs like Green's Tavern are part of the Showcase Band and Rock Ensemble programs - designed to give students of all ages the experiences of a gigging band.  Music Authority currently offers two, audition only, students bands - Rise and Eclipse.  There are three Rock Ensemble bands - Unveiled, Transcend, and our adult group - Vintage Cab.

Rock Ensemble still has room for keys and bass players - all other spaces are full!

Thank you for investing in Music Authority's mission.

Every day, the Music Authority teaching staff comes to work at the best job around.  We sow seeds of courage, confidence, and character in the spirits of the students we are privileged to teach.

As these young (and not so young) students go out into the world to become doctors, attorneys, scientists, artists, and musicians, they will forever carry the lessons they have learned here.  Not only note values and melodies, but also accountability, self confidence, the ability to speak in front of an audience, and so much more.

We can't accomplish these lofty goals alone.  For us to do what we do best - teaching private lessons, rock band programs, camps, and concerts - we need you.  We need you to purchase tickets, guitars, drum sticks, and lessons.  Without you, Music Authority can't do what you love - provide outstanding education and experiences for your children.

Each dollar you spend is an investment - an investment in your student's experience.  An investment in the future of hundreds of young people.

We can't do this without you.  Thank you for taking the time to come to Music Authority to purchase the guitar.  I know it's easy to order online while drinking coffee in your bathrobe.  I appreciate the time it takes to come down here.  But here, your purchase is about so much more than just buying a guitar.

At Music Authority, the dollars you spend on products is reinvested in the educational programs that brought you to Music Authority in the first place.  The owners aren't buying a million dollar home.  They're continuing to reinvest in the educational standards that set Music Authority apart.

Your purchase is helping to sustain a valuable resource - the programs and teaching staff your student loves and adores.

We look forward to serving you this holiday season.
