Music Authority Family Newsletter - January 30, 2024

Practice Less, But More Often

When we start a new year, many of us set resolutions. I'm going to eat healthier. I'm going to try something new. I'm going to exercise more. I'm going to clean out that closet in the guest room.

I would like to challenge you to be more consistent in your practice time.

You don't need to practice for a long time. Usually your age in minutes twice a day is good. I like my fifteen year old students to sing for fifteen minutes in the morning and fifteen minutes in the afternoon. I know. That doesn't seem like a lot when most of us have been told thirty minutes at a time.

But it works. Why? Because they're touching their instrument more frequently.

Our bodies are amazing machines. Our muscles remember how to do tasks so our conscious mind doesn't need to think about it. We don't need to concentrate to breathe. Or write with a pen. Or walk. Our muscles remember.

The same is true for your instrument. By repeating the musical exercise more frequently, you are giving your muscles more opportunities to memorize the movement - whether it be singing, playing guitar, piano, or anything else.

I suggest you give it a try. For the next week, try practicing more frequently for shorter periods of time. See what your instructor says at your next lesson. I bet they'll see a difference!

Adult Rock Camp: Registration is Open!

Summer camp isn't just for kids! Musicians age 18 and over are welcome to join us for Adult Rock Camp - Saturdays in June, with a concert on June 30.

Are you an adult who misses playing with a band? Or maybe you never had an opportunity to try? We accept adults of all ability levels into this camp. We'll make music, laugh a little, and challenge each other.

Register at the front desk at Music Authority today!
Please Welcome Shawn Chastain to our Teaching Staff

We'd like to welcome Shawn Chastain to the teaching staff on Tuesdays!

Shawn believes in teaching with positive reinforcement, a good attitude, and a calming energy. He started teaching on Tuesdays in December and has been growing his studio with happy, excited students.

If you'd like to sign up for lessons with Shawn, please call Music Authority at 770-886-9066.

The Music Authority Roadies

The Roadies are a group of parents and adult students at Music Authority.  They meet the second Tuesday of every month at 6pm in The Backroom at Music Authority.  You can think of the Roadies as  Music Authority's PTO.  They sponsor special events, service projects, and work hard to make sure our teachers feel appreciated.  We welcome any Music Authority parent to come to our next meeting!

Our next Roadies meeting will be on February 13 at 6pm in The Backroom.  We'd love for you to join us!
Used Taylor Academy 12e

When you make your buying decisions, please consider Music Authority. Our sales floor supports the music education programs we offer. Without your purchases, we can't offer the great programs you love. Please give us an opportunity to serve you on the sales floor!

This used Academy 12e came in from a current student who wanted to upgrade their guitar. At a price of $450, including its gig bag, it's a great deal on a solid guitar. Speak to a sales representative today if you're interested!

Our students are frequently given the opportunity to perform in our community. In this clip, Amelia and Sam from Eclipse were featured musicians at The Light of Hope ceremony for CASA of Forsyth County.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - December 26, 2023

Perspective

As the year draws to a close, I take a moment and look back. Did we make a positive difference this year? Did Music Authority help our community when the need presented itself? When a student or parent was struggling, did we reach out a helping hand? Are we building a better community?

Business, and relationships, are not perfect. Sometimes we make a bad call. Sometimes we part ways. But, we look back and remember the good, learn from the bad, and walk onward. We said goodbye to some good people this year that we will miss. But, we had the opportunity to say hello to others who have become dear members of our staff and student body. We're grateful for all of you. Each one of you impacts what we do and makes our world bigger.

I think 2023 was a good year. We were able to show our community what it means to us. From the first responders baskets in the spring to the sandwiches our students made for hungry families in the summer to the gifts for senior citizens at Christmas, we are building a culture of service to our community.

But, for me, the photo above drives so much of what we are. Twenty performers. Five different faith backgrounds coming together to celebrate winter and the holiday season. Songs in Hebrew, Latin, and English. Secular, Classical, and Sacred music.

This is what Music Authority Family is to me this year. Many different cultures and backgrounds coming together to make music. A diverse group of unique individuals who make music together. Thank you for being part of our Music Authority Family.

Welcoming Antonio Smarrelli to the Teaching Staff at Music Authority

We'd also like to welcome Shawn Chastain to the teaching staff on Tuesdays.

If you'd like to sign up for lessons with either of these talented teachers, please call Music Authority at 770-886-9066.

Thank You for Making the Holidays Special

This year, Music Authority took on several charities for the holiday season. We were able to make a difference in many lives; something we couldn't have done without you.

Thank you for helping us support two children in the Family Promise program; the boys at Bald Ridge Lodge; and many seniors through Forsyth County Senior Services. By working together, we made the holidays a little more special for individuals in need in our county.
