Music Authority Family Newsletter - December 17, 2019

How To Give Your Student the Best Chance at Success
Christmas morning.  There's a minefield of wrapping paper in your living room.  You're quietly sipping your coffee while the kids play with their new toys.  The dog is munching away at a bone from Santa.  All is well with the world.

All is well until, only a week later, the new guitar/bass/ukulele is sitting unused in the corner of the room and you wonder what Santa was thinking when they picked that gift.

Don't fear, all is not lost!

Success on an instrument boils down to two basic things.  The first, does the instrument play properly, is easy to look at and fix.

Was the instrument purchased from a store where someone took it out of the box, made sure everything was working, and set it up properly for you?  If not, don't worry.  It can still be made to play well.

Instruments are made from wood.  Wood warps and moves with heat, cold, humidity, and dryness.  Most instruments are shipped from overseas, sit in a warehouse, and then are sold online or through big box stores like Target or Guitar Center.  They never see human hands between leaving the port in Asia and landing in your living room on Christmas morning.

Adjustment is knocked out of whack, tuning keys get loose, or strings fall out of tune.

Bring it by our repair shop and we can take care of all of that for you.  When you get the guitar back, it will be easier to play - and your young rock star will be more likely to stick with their dreamed future on the road recording hits.

The second thing you can do?  Music lessons.  Students who are guided by a teacher are more likely to stick with lessons for the long run.  Make them commit to at least 90 days.  Three months gets them past the hardest part (my fingers hurt) and get them to a point where they're playing something that sounds good.

2020 is looking like a great year; the year your child succeeds at music.  Let us know what we can do to help your year musically excellent!

Music Authority Family Newsletter - December 10, 2019

Afghanistan, Kuwait, At Sea
My favorite service project of the year is the Any Soldier project.  Each year, the Music Authority Roadies collect items to send to American military stationed over seas.

These packages, sent to "Any Soldier," are filled with items from home that are often hard to come by overseas.  Beef jerky, card games, magazine, water packets, hygiene items, and other creature comforts that help make the holidays a little more bright for men and women far from home.

We are able to connect to American military units through a program called, Any Soldier.  From there, men and women volunteer to be the mail contact for people who want to send care packages to unknown units.  The contact soldier posts the needs of their unit. Things like: personal hygiene items needed or we do our own laundry, soap packets are welcome.

More often than not, posts say, anything helps to keep up morale.

We sent boxes to more than ten units this year representing over 1000 soldiers.  That means sometime in the next few weeks, ten units will get a little bit of home from the Music Authority Family.  We include a letter explaining who we are and how to reach us.  Sometimes, we get an email or letter back.  Usually, we don.  But that's okay.  We know the packages make it to where they're going.

This year, two sets of boxes when to navy boats at sea.

Thank you to everyone who helped by donating money, time, or items for our boxes.  If you missed out, your family can go to www.anysoldier.com and send your own box.  All boxes are appreciated.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - December 3, 2019

Catching Up with Christian Strandquist
Music Authority alumni Christian Strandquist stopped by over Thanksgiving weekend to say hi and catch up.  I took the opportunity to ask him about school, his experience at Belmont, and the most important thing he learned while at Music Authority.

Christian, in his second year at Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee, is studying Music Business with a Production Emphasis.  Looking back, he says he wishes he wold have been more relaxed his Freshman year.  He missed out on a lot because he was so focused on "not failing out" that he didn't do a lot of social things that first semester.

Now that he's more settled and comfortable in his classes, he finding a balance between school work and social activities.  "Networking is so important," Christian says.  "You can meet anyone at Belmont."

He admits it's difficult at first to walk up to a stranger and introduce yourself.  Once you realize everyone else is there for the same reason, it gets easier.  "Don't think you're above anyone," he says.  You never know where a new connection might take you.  "A good network makes the difference in success."

When asked what his goal is for the future, Christian says he wants to have a solid network that will open up options for jobs.  Rather than focus on one professional goal - say working at a publishing firm - he wants to make sure he knows people doing a lot of different jobs because you never know where you might end up.

Finally, I asked Christian what the most important thing he learned at Music Authority was.  He said, "It's something Andrew used to say, be a yes man."

Whenever possible, Christian says yes to everyone.  Saying yes to help his publishing professor carry books to his car earned him a mentor and a pass to the NAMM Show in Nashville.  Saying yes to another student, who happened to be and older student who returned to college after spending time on the road, gave Christian the opportunity to observe that student working on his next album in the recording studio.

We're always happy to catch up with students when they're back in town from college.  It sounds like Christian is making strides toward an incredible professional career.  We can't wait to see what he accomplishes next!
