2020 in Review

2020.  What can I say about this year in review?  It's been one for the books, that's for certain.

The year started out well.  Spring Show rehearsals were under way, Beyond and Eclipse had gigs scheduled, we had five full rock ensembles, and lessons were maxing out at over 650 students per week.

And then March hit.  In a last ditch effort for normalcy, we held our Spring Show as planned (albeit with lots of disinfectant, distanced seating, and no backstage antics).  The Spring Show was the day after Forsyth County Schools closed for what would ultimately be the year.

After that, we transferred all of our classes to a temporary online platform that worked, but didn't give students the opportunity to thrive like in person lessons had.  Many kids struggled, progress slowed, families lost interest in music.

Retail closed and for six, long weeks, Andrew, Melissa, and Natalie worked at the store to keep lessons going while everyone else was either temporarily laid off or working from home.  It was lonely.  Staff started to return in May with new protocols to keep everyone healthy and in June students started to return.

Ultimately, student numbers dropped to only 400 students per week (we've been slowly growing and are excited to be back at 460 today).  Summer camp, against all odds, happened.  Families were grateful for the normal experience of camp (even if kids had to distance and wear masks).  We had Rock Camp, Rock Camp, Jr., Vocal Camp, and Art Camp.  Things were looking up.

In August, Music Authority lost one of it's puppy mascots - Freddy the Rescue Pup.  Anyone who had stopped in over the summer had watched him run around the store in his wheels (he'd gone paralyzed in his back legs).  Unfortunately, the IVDD that took his back legs from him ultimately won the battle on August 4 and Freddy crossed the rainbow bridge.  Another difficult moment in a difficult year.

And now, the good stuff.  As we've adapted and persevered in COVID, we've stayed healthy (only a handful of COVID cases and no traceable transmission inside of Music Authority).  We've stuck with CDC guidelines and watched students return to lessons, recitals, and rock ensembles.  We've learned our customers support us and care for us.

We've had families step up to make sure we could make it through the toughest business experience of our careers.  For that, we are grateful.  We've never felt so supported, so loved, and so cared about as we have over the last nine months.  Because of you, Music Authority is still here.  Because you decided to splurge on a guitar, because you trusted us, because you included a little extra in your lessons check, "just because."

We aren't to the end of this COVID craziness yet, but we're surviving and we're making it through to the other side.  I believe that one day we'll all see each other's smiles again.  I believe that one day, we'll have five full rock ensemble again.  I believe we'll see a busy sales floor and 650 students per week.  It won't happen over night.  It will take hard work, dedication, and one step forward at a time.

Thank you for sticking with us through an incredibly tough year.  Thank you for believing in The Music Authority Family.  Thank you for being part of our team and our family.  We couldn't have done it without you.

Here's to 2020.  May we have learned more than we have lost; may we always remember what it feels like to support our local businesses; may we hold onto the kindnesses and forget the anger.  And may 2021 bring with it hope, love, and joy.

A COVID Christmas

How are your holiday plans changing due to COVID?  It seems like we're all learning to adapt and create new holiday memories.  I normally sing in Christmas Eve services and I'm adjusting to knowing that might not happen this year.  I won't be spending Christmas Day with my parents, Andrew and I will have a quiet holiday alone with our pets.

Don't get me wrong, a day off with the opportunity to sleep in and watch movies on television sound completely relaxing after a stress filled year.

How does music play into your holiday?  Will there be songs around the Christmas tree or to celebrate Hanukkah?  Do your holiday dreams include a new guitar or amplifier?  How about a drum set or an effects pedal?  Do your stockings need guitar picks or drum sticks?

We're all doing things a little differently this year.  If you've never thought about shopping local this holiday season, I would like to encourage you to do so this year.  Order one less gift from Amazon and help support the struggling business owners in your community.  We're all reinventing ourselves daily, doing our best to keep our door open and our employees paid.

Local businesses pay local taxes.  They provide local jobs and give back to local charities.  We're the first to step up when Meals By Grace needs help feeding needy families.  We help provide gifts to kids in foster care and drop off cat litter at the animal shelter when they put out a call for help.  We don't do it for thanks and often we do it without any fanfare.  We do it because we care about the community we live in and we want our community to thrive.

This year when you shop, think about stores like Dutch Monkey Doughnuts, Simple Strands, Talk of the Table, and The Gibson Company.  Think about Giorgio's and Marie's Deli.  Think about the small shops and restaurants that are part of this community we all love.  They've all worked hard to get through a summer, fall, and now the beginning of a winter of COVID.  Support them so that they can continue to support the community we live in.

And, if it's on your list, stop by Music Authority and let us help you find that guitar, amplifier, drum set, or stocking stuffer for your tree.  We would be honored to serve you this holiday season.

Keeping Students Healthy

A lot has been said this year about keeping ourselves healthy.  As flu season approaches (adding more concerns to an already concerning year), we wanted to review with you what we're doing at Music Authority to keep our students as healthy as possible.

All studios have plastic barriers between teachers and students.  These movable barriers will stay in place during lessons, but are movable so our teachers can get in and out of their studio.

All teachers have access to medical grade sanitizer and we've asked them to spray down shared equipment between lessons.

There is hand sanitizer at the front door of the store and plenty of soap in each bathroom.

We request that masks be worn while in the store.

If a student becomes sick, we will disinfect the studio (with medical grade sanitizer) and notify students that may have been in contact with the student.  So far, we have had very limited exposure.

All recitals are socially distanced with very limited seating for an audience.

We continue to stay on top of the changes in regulations and suggestions from the CDC in dealing with COVID and also coming soon, the flu season.  We feel that interaction is important to the mental health of our students so we will continue to do our best to keep everyone here healthy and safe.

Thank you for being part of the Music Authority Family and on this crazy journey with us.  We look forward to a day when we can see each others smiles without masks!

It's that time of year again - time for our biggest Service Project.  Each year, we collect items for American military stationed overseas during the holidays. Please pick up something extra the next time you're at the grocery story and add it to our box.  Last year, we sent over 70 boxes.  How many can we send this year?

Common items: Shampoo, Soap, Razors, Beef Jerky, Peanut Butter, Hard Candy (not chocolate), Books, Magazines.

We also need money to ship items.  Donations can be made out to "The Music Authority Roadies."

Music Authority Family Newsletter - March 10, 2020

Inspire to Perform

This Friday, March 13, is the Spring Show!

What is the Spring Show?  It's a time when the staff and students at Music Authority put on one heck of a performance!  Any student at Music Authority can register to perform; they're placed in a band; rehearse for 10 weeks; then perform their hearts out.

Why is it important for other students to see the show?  Inspiration!

Our records show that students who perform are significantly more likely to stay in lessons and continue to reap the benefits of a musical education.  Non-performing students stay in lessons an average of 3 months.  Students who perform stay 5-7 years.  Performance is an important part of a musical education!

The best way to inspire a student to start performing is to inspire them by bringing them to watch other students their age perform.  Friday's show will have students of all ages.  Be sure to bring yours to enjoy the show, find the inspiration, and maybe watch your own teachers on stage, too!

Music Authority Family Newsletter - February 25

Music is Not a Zero Sum Game
As I'm working on social media, I frequently find where people (of all ages) post unnecessarily mean things about performers.  Most recently, someone posted a critical post about our Guitar Ensemble's performance of Bach at a recent concert.  The post, now gone, implied it was embarrassing for a group of guitarist to hack up a classical song that any decent pianist could perform.

I replied to the post that we were proud of guitar ensemble, just as we are of all our 640 students, and we thought the performance was awesome.

What the poster, a musician who happens to be a classical pianist, forgot is this: music is not a zero sum game.  Just because I win doesn't mean you lose.

We do our best at Music Authority to teach our students to be supportive of all other musicians.  There's never a good reason to be mean or hurtful to someone who is pouring their soul into their performance.  If their art isn't something you enjoy, move on.

Putting yourself out there on stage is tough enough for most of us.  The courage it takes to step on stage alone should be applauded.  To have someone that is simply a bully tear you down is uncalled for.

Besides, you never know who you're going to see later in life at another gig.  (I ran into a former teacher at a show I sang on Sunday.)

The moral of the story?  Be kind.  Be supportive.  Be the musician everyone wants to play with because you're thoughtful and prepared.

(And if you want to see that awesome Guitar Ensemble performance, it's posted to Music Authority's Facebook site.)

Adult Rock Camp

Call adult musicians!  Time gets away from us.  We've always wanted to be in a band, but life, jobs, kids, all happen and suddenly its been years since we picked up the guitar.

Now's your chance to change that.  The committment?  Four Saturdays in June (3:30 - 5:30) and one show on Sunday, June 28.

Saturdays in June.
Cost: $275

Weather is Brutal on Guitars

Have you noticed your guitar buzzing?  (Buzzing is when the strings vibrate against the frets and causes a "rattle.")  Or has it gotten more difficult to play, the strings pulling away from the neck?

Guitars are made of wood, which shifts and warps with changes in weather.  Having a set up on your guitar once every 6-8 months will keep your guitar in top playing condition, fix any play-ability issues, and extend the life of your instrument.

Bring yours in to Music Authority today to have one of our expert repair technicians check it out.
Please follow Music Authority on Facebook; on Instagram @musicauthorityinc; and join the Music Authority Roadies Facebook group for informational articles and to keep up to date with the happenings at Music Authority.
Macartney Reinhardt on Georgia Has Talent

Music Authority student Macartney Reinhardt is competing as part of Georgia Has Talent.  One of twenty competitors, she'll be singing and raising money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

How Much Should I Practice?
It's the second most asked question I hear:how much should I practice?  (The most asked question is, how long does it take to learn how to play ________?  The answer is - it depends on how much you practice.)

Practice is a very personal thing.  What works for me may not work for you.  I have serious attention issues.  I will run a piece of music three times and then move on to another task.  I'll come back later and run in three more times several times during the day.  I find if I force myself to sit still and practice for 30 minutes, my mind wanders and its a waste of time.

If you're like me, your brain always worrying about the next task you need to complete, try small increments.  Do a little and then move on to something else.  Come back later and do a little more.

The positive part about practicing like this is that it will allow you to touch your instrument more frequently and your muscle memory will develop faster.  The more often you play, the faster your muscles will "remember."

How about your child - how frequently should they practice?  Their age in minutes, twice daily.  Children have limited attention spans.  Too much time practicing and they'll start to forget what they're learning.  Their minds wander and they'll end up thinking about the cat and not about whole notes.

If you're struggling with practice, try changing things up.  Practice for less time, more frequently, or at a different time of the day.  Mornings don't work?  Try evenings.  Find a rhythm that works for you and stick with it.  Before long, you'll reap the results of a successful lesson!

Music Authority Family Newsletter - January 21,2020

Communication is the Key
What's the most difficult thing to teach a band full of teenagers?  It isn't how to play notes, how to look interested on stage, or even how to write a song.  The hardest part is teaching communication.

We all have our own language - a language we develop as we grow up, based on our experiences and our home of origin.  I had a college professor explain it like this - if you've never seen a baby shark in the waters off of South Georgia, you'll never understand what I mean when I say, as blue as a baby shark.

Sometimes, Eclipse spends most of their rehearsal day learning how to communicate better.

All too frequently, we go through life speaking our own language and blaming others if they don't understand.  Or we feel silly asking what someone means, so we keep our mouths shut and end up upset about something that could have been avoided.

A teacher reminded me this week that we're all on this Music Authority ship together. We all want our students to be successful.  He also reminded me that as I bulldoze through my day, I don't always stop to make sure someone understands what I mean.  That sometimes, "that song is too hard" really means, "that student isn't ready for this challenge yet, lets come back to this in a few months when they have more practice under their belts."

If you're confused, please don't be afraid to ask a question.  We want you to understand.  We want you to be on this journey with us and we're more than happy to sit down, talk through your concerns and questions, and make sure we're all on the same page and moving in the same direction.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - January 6,2020

Onward
2019 is a wrap.  As I sat with my feet up on New Year's Eve, listening to the fireworks outside, I felt satisfied with the year.  We had our ups - podcasts, awards, honors, and smiling faces.  We had a few tears - illness, goodbyes, and a final farewell to Music Authority's Rise.  But, as a whole, 2019 was good to the Music Authority Family.

So, now what?

We come back to work and make 2020 even better.

We're starting out strong with a new Point of Sale system.  (Although if you've seen the mess in my office, you will also know the data entry is slow going.  Please be patient with us until we get the entire store up and running.)

We've done a bit of redecorating and will be clearancing out things that just don't work for us any more.

You'll also see some new types of products arriving over the next few months.  Music is, after all, a lifestyle - not just a hobby.

We're also looking at ways to continue to make each student feel special.  There are so many of you now (623 as of this morning), it would be easy for us to leave you as a number on a spreadsheet. We want to be better than that.  Please don't be irritated when we call to check in.  It's our way of making sure we know how your lessons are going and letting you know that we care.

What can we do to make your experience at Music Authority better?  I know bigger doesn't equal better.  Just because we have over 600 students doesn't mean we should treat you like a megastore that doesn't care.  Having that big of a staff and student base allow us to offer you more options.  It allows you to pick the teacher that works for you - not just the teacher who happens to be available.

I love feedback.  If you have a suggestion, or a question about something, please reach out.   I might not respond immediately, but I will always respond.  How can we make your experience special.  Your education better.  Your musical dreams more attainable.  Let me know.

I can't take credit for the title of this article.  My favorite business book is about Starbucks and it's called Onward.  Does anyone remember when Starbucks was in danger of closing many years ago?  Remember when they whole corporation closed for an afternoon to re-learn how to pour drinks?  The CEO, a returned from retirement CEO named Howard Schultz, penned the term.

What it means to me is to always focus forward.  Focus on the road we're on, not on where we've been.  As Music Authority embraces a new year, we're moving forward.  While we're grateful for our past, and remember those who have traveled this road with us, we know we're travelling down a road no one has ever been down before.  Keep our eyes on the road and our focus on the horizon.

Thank you for being on this journey with us.

More Smiling Faces Than Ever Before

Music Authority set a number of new records this year - total number of students, number of campers at camp, we added a 5th week of summer camp, number of students in Rock Ensembles, number of recitals and concerts, just to mention a few.  We have you to thank!  Without you, the dedicated parents and musicians who come each week, we couldn't do what we do.  Thank you for making 2019 legendary!

2019 saw the official end to Music Authority's original showcase band, Rise.  In a moving tribute, former Rise members Jake Lanni, Brayden Sudduth, and Savannah Hughes played the band out as Music Authority's newest band, Beyond took the stage for the first time.

How To Give Your Student the Best Chance at Success
Christmas morning.  There's a minefield of wrapping paper in your living room.  You're quietly sipping your coffee while the kids play with their new toys.  The dog is munching away at a bone from Santa.  All is well with the world.

All is well until, only a week later, the new guitar/bass/ukulele is sitting unused in the corner of the room and you wonder what Santa was thinking when they picked that gift.

Don't fear, all is not lost!

Success on an instrument boils down to two basic things.  The first, does the instrument play properly, is easy to look at and fix.

Was the instrument purchased from a store where someone took it out of the box, made sure everything was working, and set it up properly for you?  If not, don't worry.  It can still be made to play well.

Instruments are made from wood.  Wood warps and moves with heat, cold, humidity, and dryness.  Most instruments are shipped from overseas, sit in a warehouse, and then are sold online or through big box stores like Target or Guitar Center.  They never see human hands between leaving the port in Asia and landing in your living room on Christmas morning.

Adjustment is knocked out of whack, tuning keys get loose, or strings fall out of tune.

Bring it by our repair shop and we can take care of all of that for you.  When you get the guitar back, it will be easier to play - and your young rock star will be more likely to stick with their dreamed future on the road recording hits.

The second thing you can do?  Music lessons.  Students who are guided by a teacher are more likely to stick with lessons for the long run.  Make them commit to at least 90 days.  Three months gets them past the hardest part (my fingers hurt) and get them to a point where they're playing something that sounds good.

2020 is looking like a great year; the year your child succeeds at music.  Let us know what we can do to help your year musically excellent!

The Backroom hosted it's final Acoustic Night of the year on December 13, 2019.  A fabulous group of artists shared their skills, some holiday (and some contemporary) music, and helped collect items for the Forsyth County Animal Shelter.  We finished off the night with a sing along of "Silent Night."
