Music Authority Instructor Bret Dorton – Drums:
Bret had been exposed to all types of music starting at a very early age. During which his father, who was also a musician, would play his guitar around the house. At age 12 he joined his father’s country-country rock band and played local clubs, weddings, parties and even had an opportunity to open for the Charlie Daniels Band.
Bret grew his talents as he got older by playing different genres such as blues, metal, rock and progressive rock. These experiences provided valuable performance knowledge and expertise that he would build on professionally.
He has been in the studio four times, resulting in the production of two professional albums. (Second glance) in 1993 and (Iron Lace) in 1983 that garnered air play.
His musical influences run from ABBA to Van Halen, and everything in between. When speaking about these groups he refers to the drummers which include, Buddy Rich, Virgil Donati, Alex Van Halen, Vinnie Colaiuta, Marco Minnemann and of course Danny Carey and host of others.
He attended the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media from 2007 to 2009. There He was influenced by two of his instructors, Tom Knight (drummer for T L C) and Craig Harber (drummer for B.J. Thomas, Bo Diddley and others). He received a certificate of musicianship and developed a strong skill for reading and writing drum related music which directly relates to his work as a drum instruction professional.
