Keeping Summer Focus

Keeping Focus Over the Summer
Spring Break is here and that means summer is just around the corner.  We know schedules change, family vacations are booked, and for some families, daytime child care is arranged.  But this isn't the time to drop lessons.

Only 7% of students who drop for the summer ever return.

Almost all parents say, "we're just dropping for the summer, we'll be back in August."  But only 7 out of 100 actually return.

Why is this important?  Think of some of the reasons to take music lessons:
- Self-Discipline
- Work Ethic
-Higher SAT Scores
- Reduces Stress
- Improves Memory

Staying in music lessons can actually help your child do better in school.  And it's fun!  They're enjoying playing their instrument, preparing for a show, and they're really developing better math skills.

And then there's your investment.  If you started lessons in August, you've already invested over $1,000 in music lessons by the time June arrives.  Don't lose the investment, utilize credits and make up opportunities to make summer lessons make sense.

Last, improve your focus over the summer by enrolling in summer music camps.  No matter what your student's age, we have the right program for you!

Thank you for being part of the Music Authority Family!  Have a safe and fun Spring Break, and don't forget to let us know if you aren't going to be here.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - March 26, 2019

This is Our House

This is Our House
My favorite moment from last Friday's show, "It's My Pirate Ship," was the very last song.  There's something special about standing on a stage, looking out at a sea of faces (over 200 of you) that are clapping in rhythm and singing along with the performers.  Most of you don't know the story behind that song, or why we do it at the end of our shows.

Let me share it with you.

It was after June's Rock Camp last summer.  Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, a few loved faces at Music Authority were moving on to other things.  This left many students feeling hurt and abandoned.  July's Rock Camp comes along; the theme is Baseball songs.  Songs you hear at games, songs about the sport, songs you know from Baseball movies.

"This is Our House" by Bon Jovi was one of the songs on that set list.  Before that camp, several parents had already mentioned it would be nice to close every Music Authority show with the same song.  Something of a theme for the Music Authority family.  A few songs were tossed around, nothing fit.

Then Rock Camp happened.  Several families reached out, this is the song, this is what the Music Authority family is all about.

We made it our theme song for 2019.

To the students and families at Music Authority, the anthem stands for family.  It's about working hard, making it to show night, and rocking out with a great performance.  It's about solidarity; about students standing together to be successful; about supporting each other and cheering each other on to shine.  It's about pride in Music Authority and pride in our "team."

Music Authority might not be a sports team, but we are a family.  We're a family who will stand up for each other, cheer for each other, support each other, and encourage each other.  We're a family who let young, first-time performers borrow our courage until they build enough of their own.  We're performers who will reach out a helping hand when asked.  We're teachers and students who will be there, no questions asked, when the community needs us.

We are Music Authority Family and we're glad you're a part of us.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - March 19, 2019

A Soon To Be Music Authority Alumni Mom; Melissa Loggins; Revstar; Broadway Camp; and Pirates!

The Words of a Soon To Be Music Authority Alumni Parent - Guest Article by Kim Sudduth
As parents, my husband, Gregg and I encouraged our children to try a variety of things. Over the years they've been involved in a variety of sports, martial arts, Scouts, theater, video production, film making and music.

While camping in May of 2011, our 12 year old son, Brayden struck up a conversation with Brandon McKinney, the drummer for Graham's Number. That conversation lit a spark in Brayden... soon after he asked us if he could take lessons... he wanted to learn how to play the drums! Once home, we talked to a friend whose child took music lessons (this was new territory for us) and Music Authority (MA) was recommended. A phone call was made and lessons with Mike McAllister at MA began. We had no idea that those lessons were the beginning of an amazing experience for our son (for our family)... one that would carry him through high school and into adulthood.

Performing at Spring shows, Rock Camps and Fall shows were something he began looking forward to. In March of 2014, Brayden received an invitation to be the drummer for Music Authority's first showcase band, Rise. What an honor for our high school Freshman! I could write a whole other article on the great times he/we had during his time with Rise. It was truly a blessing. Rise wasn't a sport, but it took dedication and hard work... it taught teamwork and how to communicate... it felt like MA's version of an all-star team.

Brayden was fortunate to play with Rise until he graduated high school in 2017 and aged-out of the band. Those Rise years provided several amazing opportunities... touring the Atlanta Institute of Music and SAE Institute, recording in an actual studio, performing at the Forsyth County Fair, Dawsonville's Moonshine Festival, CooCoo's Nest, 37 Main, Crimson Moon, Venkman's, Wild Wing Cafe, Rosati's... the list goes on.

About the time that Brayden was invited to be in Rise, our daughter Jordan asked if she could take guitar lessons. The answer was yes. She was fortunate to get a guitar for her 13th birthday and a spot on the schedule at MA with the amazing Justin Cain. Jordan enjoyed playing and having watched her brother perform, she signed up for Rock Camp. Not long after Rock Camp, she began taking voice lessons with Melissa Loggins.  As Jordan's schedule got busier with various activities, including musical theater, she realized there weren't enough hours in the day to dedicate the time that was required for each of her hobbies. She made the difficult decision to stop guitar lessons (she still dabbles for fun), but continue with voice. Not only has Melissa been her vocal coach since 2014, but also a mentor, due to the love they share for writing, as well as a friend that Jordan could talk to about life, her health issues and/or her anxiety. Those lessons became much more to Jordan than just learning a new song. It was a time where she could be herself and decompress.

One of the things we're most thankful for about Music Authority is that both of our children considered it a safe place. A place where they were accepted for who they were and weren't judged. No one made fun of our son for his long hair or choice of dark clothing. No one discouraged our daughter from singing or playing guitar or ukulele. It gave them... our family... something special to be a part of... the Music Authority Family. And that's truly what it is... a group of children and parents that are there for each other to celebrate good times and accomplishments and support each other when life throws us something difficult.

As Jordan approaches her final Music Authority performance at this week's Spring Show, we are fortunate to say that she, like her brother, learned so much during her time at MA.  Five years of lessons, Rock Camp, Spring & Fall shows, one that included a performance with her brother, recitals and Rented Christmas this past December... so many memories. We believe music will always be a part of their lives in one way or another, but they leave with something so much greater!

Brayden graduated last fall from The DAVE School with a certificate in Game Production and is currently an Associate 3D Artist at GameSim in Orlando. He played a few gigs with The Rogue Scholars while at school in Orlando and now travels north to play drums with some other MA alums in No Strings Attached. After her graduation in May, Jordan will be attending Vancouver Film School for their Writing for Film, Television & Games program. She plans to pursue a career in screenwriting and potentially directing or casting.

Although neither of our children chose to pursue a career in music, skills like commitment, confidence, communication and acceptance were gained each time they went to a lesson, practiced at home, rehearsed with a band or got up on stage. It's bittersweet that our time at Music Authority is coming to a close, but the great thing is that family will always be family... each of us have made life long friendships that will continue to offer support even after the lessons and performances have ended

Music Authority Family Newsletter - March 12, 2019

Senior Spotlight: Kate Sikes; Yamaha THR5; Rock Camp, Jr.; and What Instrument Should My Child Play?

What Instrument Should My Child Learn?
I hear this question a lot.  Parents call or come in with their child, usually around the age of 6, and ask what instrument their child should learn.  There's usually a particular light in the parents eyes, one that silently tells me, "say piano."

Starting music lessons on piano makes a lot of sense, if piano is what your child wants to play.  You'll learn how to read and write music, you'll build muscles in your hands and arms, you'll develop math skills, and pick up dozens of other benefits from playing a musical instrument.  The student can also get bored, refuse to practice, and develop a dislike for music if piano isn't the instrument for them.

When the family is in front of me when I'm asked that question, I will generally next turn my attention to the potential student and ask them, "what would you like to play?"

(This is also the part where I get an unhappy look from many parents.  Goodness forbid if the child says drums.)

Children who start studying music with an instrument they're excited about will last longer in lessons.  (Refer back to my previous articles if you want the full story on keeping kids engaged.)

However, I do understand kids can get frustrated, especially in the beginning of lessons.  The vision of playing guitar and the reality of the work that goes into it are very different.  Providing carrots will often help students through the tough times.  "Stick with the lessons for six months and we'll upgrade your guitar after your first recital."

Lessons can seem unending to a young person.  As adults, time flies by.  We have intentions to go home to see the family each year until five or six have passed.  One year in the life of a forty year old is less than 3% of our life.  One year to a seven year old is almost 15% of their life.  Time seems much longer.

A seven year old who is in lessons for six months is in lessons "forever."  If there's no payoff, no certificate of accomplishment, no recital (preferably followed by celebratory ice cream), or no change in routine, student will start to lose focus.

So, what instrument should your child take?  Why don't you ask the child?

Senior Spotlight - Kate Sikes

Kate Sikes is the youngest in a family of Music Authority students.  She originally started all the way back in 2015 on guitar with instructor Chase Napier.  Several teachers, and a change of instruments later, she's finishing her Music Authority years as a drummer in the studio of Brandon Faulkner.

Kate will be joining her brother this fall at Georgia Southern.  She plans on majoring in Computer Systems Analysis and minoring in Music Theory.

Yamaha THR5

The THR5 offers the sound quality of the larger THR10 in a more portable form, making it perfect for use at home or when traveling. Now the THR5 has been upgraded version 2, with an even better sound that defies the convention that sound quality has to be sacrificed in a small amp with a small sound.
