Memories from a Dummer with Special Guest Brayden Sudduth

Memories - By Brayden Sudduth
Brayden Sudduth, a Music Authority alumni who has recently moved back to the Atlanta area after finishing school in Orlando, has picked up the drum sticks again and plays with the band No Strings Attached.  We had the opportunity to ask him about his time at Music Authority and his time as a drummer for Rise.  This is what he had to say.

Some of my most favored memories I have from my time in Rise were from anytime we performed at Coo Coo’s Nest. It’s where we got our big start and I think that's why it's such an iconic memory for me.  My favorite memory of all time from that time, however, has to be when we played the Finish Line stage at the Dawsonville Moonshine Festival. Just looking out into that massive crowd of people while performing seemed so surreal at the time.

To me, Rise was a family. A family of incredibly talented musicians, each looking to push their  existing skills to the next level and willing to learn new skills not just as individuals but  collectively as a band.

What am I grateful for?  Honestly if it wasn't for Rise being created in the first place I wouldn't be where I am today, from a musical standpoint. My skills as a drummer wouldn't be where they are today at all and I certainly wouldn't have been given the opportunity to be a part of bands like “No Strings Attached” and “The Rogue Scholars”.

I wish I would have done one thing differently: I would have tried to plan more band hangouts and events outside of rehearsals and gigs. We had a lot of different musicians come and go while Rise was around and spending more time with each other outside of the scheduled gigs and rehearsals could have helped some of the newer members feel more comfortable around the more “senior” members of Rise.

Thank you for your memories and advice to your up and coming band members.  We look forward to seeing you play again soon!

Music Authority has been doing Rock Camp for over a decade.  Long before YouTube, we had VHS tapes availble (and later DVDs) of the performance.  This is from one of the first ever Rock Camps uploaded to YouTube.  All of these young people have long since graduated and moved on, but they live in Music Authority history.

Goodbye and Godspeed

Goodbye - For Now
Swan Song, Music Authority's final farewell to our graduating seniors, is over.  Most have finished their lessons journey and are preparing to move on to the next phase of their lives.  Some will be staying for the summer, some longer, but with the huge achievement of high school behind them, there was a collective sigh of relief in Forsyth and surrounding counties this weekend.

We're sending almost a dozen young musicians out into the world this year.  They'll study nursing, music, business administration, photography, and computer sciences, among other things.

These graduates will join a group of alumni that still amaze us; a group of adult musicians who are making their mark on the world.

We will miss them all.  (Although, truth be told, most weekends you can find many of our alumni hanging around Music Authority and Music Authority events.  It warms our hearts and makes us grateful that MA has become a place that is still home to these adults after they've graduated and moved on.)

For me, this year marks the end of my private studio.  Starting this fall, I will be dedicating my teaching time to the ensemble program.  I graduated several this year - most of them started with me when they were in the fourth grade.  It seemed like the right time.  Maybe in a few years, I'll pick up a new group of fourth graders.  For today, this week is a finale for me, as well.

The lessons they learned at Music Authority will stay with them forever.  They learned not to be afraid to try something new.  (Elizabeth, can you try to play bass in camp?  We really need another bass player.)  They learned that girls can rock.  (Yes, you're going to have a girl drummer, her name is Kate.)  They learned they can still sing after taking some time off.  (Come on, Jordan, it's time to get out from behind the camera and get back on stage.)

These students learned how to work together, how to be confident, how to not give up, how to get through tough times and enjoy the good.  They've created friendships that will last forever and a support network that will never let them fall.

If I have one piece of advice for them this is it: never give up.  Never stop trying.  Your success is just over the next hill - and when you get there don't judge your success.  It's rarely what you think it will be.  It is often much more.

When I graduated high school, I wanted to open a performance school.  (Back then, I still wanted to teach dance, too.)  I guess you can say I was successful.  What I didn't count on was not just creating a school, but also on creating a family.

To our graduates this year: Jordan, Isadora, Cari, Madi, Mason, Jack, Carter, Rohan, Emory, Lindsay, Sebastian, Niki, Kate, and Elizabeth.  Good luck.  Goodspeed.  Live long and prosper.

This week isn't goodbye.  Come back soon, share a cup of coffee with us, and tell us about how you're doing.  There's always an empty chair and a place on our stage for you at Music Authority.

Batting Practice

Batting Practice
Imagine being a baseball player.  You go to the batting cages three times each week.  You meet with your batting coach once each week.  But you've never practiced with the other members of your team and you've never played in a game.

Are you still a baseball player?

Baseball is a social sport.  You need additional team members to win games and to become better.  You could be the best hitter in the state, but if you don't have a team to play with, no one will know or care.

Music is very much the same for many instruments.  Yes, you can have an amazing concert pianist who masters their instrument alone.  But Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto no. 2 op. 18 needs an orchestra.  The piano part from Bohemian Rhapsody needs a band.

Being part of an ensemble is paramount to the next step in learning for students.  We start with Spring and Fall Shows - easily attainable concert opportunities with minimal commitment.  From there, students move into Rock Camp and Rock Ensembles, a higher impact class that takes students to a deeper level.

Rock Camp teaches more audio training, production training, and many of the larger concepts of putting on a show.

Rock Ensemble puts students on stage for a longer period of time.  For students that are in multiple seasons, they will be taught performance skills, leadership opportunities, how to dress and present yourself professionally, and will be challenged on a more one on one basis.  (Once we know what your child is able to accomplish, we develop individualized learning plans to keep them challenged and moving forward in their musical education.)

For students wanting something more classical, we have Broadway Camp, Classical Department opportunities, and Guitar Ensemble (a guitar orchestra).  We even have an adult rock band, Origins, and an adult contemporary choir, Bel Canto Singers.

Being in a group is important to the overall development of students of all ages.  Students build self-esteem, character, learn how to work in a team, grow their public speaking skills, and have a better understanding of how their instrument(s) fit into the musical whole.
