Remembering Why We Do This

The summer trade show for NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) was held the last four days of June in Nashville, Tennessee.  As is our tradition, Andrew and I took three student Ambassadors to the show.  This is an opportunity to experience not only the music products industry, but to also take advantage of the encompassing musical world that is Nashville.

This trip came on the heels of a tough week at Music Authority, the kind of personally tough week that calls into question the whys.  Why do we do this?  Why trust?  Why give up the time, effort, and love it takes to reach the vision we have?  It was an emotionally rough time, not the kind time I would choose to leave the store to travel to Nashville.

But, destiny played a part, I was booked to be the first speaker of the convention on Thursday - presenting the topic, "5 Strategies for Lessons Program Growth."  You see, the industry looks at what we do as special, something outstanding.  (I'm proud to say that presentation filled almost all available chairs.)

So away we went to Nashville for the most magical trade show I can remember.

The Ambassadors, Kaitlyn Lahr, Savannah Hughes, and Sashu Machani, represented us well.  They networked like pros, spent time with Nashville Songwriter Kent Blazy, met with NAMM Chairperson Robin Walenta, and were shining stars in a show filled with stars.

On Friday night, Music Authority was recognized as one of the top stores in the country.  Part of the Top 100 Music Retailers for the past four years, this year we were given the spotlight - our lessons program and teachers highlighted for our program of inclusiveness of all students.  (Pay attention, Melissa, the very thing you strive for is being recognized by the industry you love!)

Two moments stood out above the rest.  First, I was able to shake hands with a store I hadn't spoken with in sixteen years.  A burned bridge perhaps beginning to mend.  The second was when an owner of Valencia School of Music in Westfield, NJ, stopped me on Friday afternoon to tell me my presentation gave her hope.  We all struggle.  We all need a little hope.

So after experiencing "The Worst Thing That Ever Happen,"  (it's really not that bad, just some broken trust) I walked away from Nashville feeling renewed hope and inspiration.  (And a bit of humility.  I appreciate my friends in the business who took the time to tell me to get over myself.  Unexpected things happen to all of us in business.  People disappoint and hurt us.  What happened to me has happened to all of them - they survived, and once I get over the hurt feelings, so will we.)

I arrived home on Saturday to find Music Authority in the midst of a face lift.  The Music Authority Roadies, doing their part to help the healing, giving their time and efforts, to make Music Authority the store and school we want it to be.

This is what I needed.  To be reminded of the families, friends, students, customers, and staff members who truly understand what it is to be Music Authority Family.  The people who have become urban family to so many others with nowhere else to go, who love each other because of a love of music.

Thanks for sticking with me through a few dark days.  Now, as Chris Mitchell of CMG guitars and Jimmy Saviano (our ESP sales rep) told me, it's time to get over myself and get to work.

Why do you like teaching? I like teaching because as a student at AIMM I always appreciated when a teacher could help me overcome any obstacles that may have made learning something difficult. Now, as a teacher, I like trying to help other students overcome their own personal obstacles.

What makes you excited about playing music? What makes me excited about playing music is just that: playing music. As a musician, I find great joy in playing music, so I use my talents to hopefully bring that same joy to other people.

What's your favorite food? Choosing my favorite food is definitely a difficult choice to make, but I’d have to say chips and salsa.

Where is your hometown? My hometown is Atlanta, Georgia!
