Music Authority Family Newsletter - November 26, 2019

Gratitude for Music
This week, instead of a normal newsletter.  You're going to hear from Music Authority students and parents.  They're going to tell you why they're grateful for music and what music has done for their lives.

All of us at Music Authority wish you a happy and restful Thanksgiving.  Thank you for being part of the Music Authority Family!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Melissa A. Loggins
Owner, Music Authority

Savannah Hughes - Guitarist, Eclipse

Why do I appreciate music? Music can be anything you want it be. It molds to a shape of whoever is listening to it, or creating it. It does not fit in a box, and it is always changing. Music can work for anyone and everyone, and that is something to appreciate. If you cannot make it, you can listen to it, and you can take whatever meaning you want from it.

I also love how music holds memories. Maybe in a moment, you are not listening to the words, but some important moment is happening in your life, you just don't know it yet. Later, when that song comes on, you can't help but think about the last time that song was playing. It evokes a memory, and the feelings around it. It is kind of like a picture in a way, but for me, that song makes me feel the way I did in that passed moment better than looking at a picture could.

Ashni Burge - Bassist, Fearless

I am grateful for music being a place that you can escape to.

Alicia Hughes - Music Authority Parent and Roadies Treasurer

I'm so grateful that our lives have crossed all these kids paths!  They are each going on and AMAZING things.  I hope in the end they'll remember their friendships, the music that brought them together, the people around them that inspired them, and their parents that endlessly did all they could to ensure their success in life.
Please follow Music Authority on Facebook; on Instagram @musicauthorityinc; and join the Music Authority Roadies Facebook group for informational articles and to keep up to date with the happenings at Music Authority.

Jaxon Elmore, Drummer for Unveiled

I am thankful for the opportunity to take lessons at Music Authority. Bret Dorton is my drum instructor and I enjoy learning from him. I am also thankful for the chance to play music for others through the various programs offered, such as the Rock Camps, shows, and ensemble bands.

Nikhil Upadhaya, Guitarist for Tribute

Something I am grateful for is the experiences performing live music has given me. It has let me live some of my dreams of playing live with people watching me in the crowds. It also increased my own confidence in being in front of a crowd. Music is also an important part of my life as I have it for when I work; hang out with friends, and even with family. If it wasn't for my introduction to certain music or music in general through my parents, I would not be half the person I am today. I am grateful for how music as positively affected my life and how it has allowed me to live a dream.

Brantley Jenkins, Bassist for Unveiled

In a way, music has given me life. I’ve always loved listening to music since is was a little kid but since I started getting older, music starting meaning more. There is always a song for everything, no matter what there’s a song. Music has given me reason for life, it has given me a passion I didn’t know I had. I’ve been in karate since I was five but didn’t start taking guitar lessons until three years ago. Started and loved it but it wasn’t easy. I almost quit multiple times but each time something kept me from stopping. The sheer power that music holds kept me from quitting and now here I am today. I love performing and playing, truly makes my days, but deep down, the best part is the music itself. Being able to listen to other people’s words and feelings in a way that pierces my very soul is something that nothing can beat.

Evin Roberts, Drummer for Tribute

I´m grateful for music because its something i can have fun with, and create using my imagination. I can just put in an ear bud and escape from everything.

Jackson Warren, Bassist for Eclipse

I grateful for the opportunities I have playing music. I enjoy playing all over the Forsyth and Atlanta area as well as getting to visit some cool places like Summer NAMM and the CMG factory. I am also thankful for the genuine, long lasting friendships I make in the Music Authority Family.

It's a much younger Music Authority Guitar Ensemble to get you into the holiday spirit (featuring a guest appearance from Kylan McNichols.)

Music Authority Family Newsletter - November 19, 2019

Passion for the Race
We teach because we have a passion for making a positive impact in the lives of others.  In teaching, we put our hearts on our sleeves and give our all to the students who pass through our doors.  We stay awake at night, trying to figure out how to get a concept across.  We stay late at work to talk to parents.  We give up our own free time to come to the football game or school musical because our student asked us to.

We don't expect back flips.  Most of the time, we don't expect thanks.  We do this because we want to; because your children matter to us.  We don't do this for the attention, the thanks, or for accolades.

When someone is upset by our absence policy or a decision we make, we miss the students and hope they continue to find growth in other places that are a better fit.  Does it hurt?  Yes.  Not because of the financial loss of a paying student, but because the students truly matter to us.

I saw a post on Facebook this week reminding me of a conversation I had earlier this year with a parent, encouraging them to let her daughter switch instruments.  (The young musician in question is now thriving on stage, conquering the stage fright that was once so terrifying.)  I remember having the conversation, but I had no idea how long-lasting of an impact it would have on the life of the child.

The parent concluded the post with "#MusicAuthorityFamily is not just about putting the most gifted and self-motivated musicians on stage—it’s also about helping ALL of the kids find a way to express themselves through music."

I'm grateful to this parent for two reminders.  First, that while we don't often get thanks, that what we do matters and is noticed.  We, the teachers at Music Authority, are leaving a lasting and positive impact on the lives of our students.  Students and parents do hear what we say, take it to heart, and remember those words in the time they need to hear them.

Second, thank you for the reminder that every student moves at their own speed.  As a teacher, my job is to identify where your student is and to challenge them.  There is no perfect cookie cutter made for everyone.  Each musician progresses in a different way at a different speed.  What getting better looks like to you isn't the same as it is for someone else.  The important part is the journey and the challenge.

This job isn't easy, but I'm eternally grateful to be gifted the opportunity to do it.  I'm thankful for the students, the parents, and the productions.  I'm grateful for the laughter, the homework assignment interviews, and the tears.  Each day seems to be a race - a race to the next rehearsal, the next concert, the next summer camp.

Thank you, Music Authority Family, for bringing the passion.  Thank you for the love, the hope, and the cheers.  Thank you for giving all of us the passion to continue the race.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - November 12, 2019

Is It Really Almost December?
Does anyone else feel like summer camp was just a couple of weeks ago?  We're barely through putting away the Halloween decorations left over from Monster Mash and Christmas music is already playing in the nail salon.  (Seriously, I'm having my nails painted black for the Fall Show and I'm listening to Silver Bells playing through the speakers.)

As time speeds by, it gets easier and easier to make those holiday purchases online while wearing PJ's, during the commercial breaks for Saturday Night Live.  I know, I thumb shop, too.

But do those online shops support your community?  Are they donating stuffed animals to Children's Healthcare for scared local kids who don't understand why they're sick?  How about backpacks and school supplies to CASA so children in foster care have the things they need for the school year?  What about collecting items for the local animal shelter?

Purchasing your gear locally has a lasting impact not just on the business, but on the community.  Locally owned business give back.  They provide jobs, which put more money into the local economy.  They support local charities and are often the first to respond in times of crisis.

As Black Friday looms, consider shopping locally.  Not just at Music Authority (but we really would appreciate it), but at other local businesses.  Mom and pop stores are labors of love.  The people who own them are passionate about their business and their customers.  Let some of our favorite local businesses show you what makes them special.

Try Dutch Monkey Doughnuts (they make amazing gluten free).  Or Marie's Deli (Marie's niece sings with Perfect Blend).  Talk of the Table (you might see Mitchell Auger singing there on a Thursday).  You won't be disappointed!

The Importance of Performance, G&L Tribute Guitars, Layaway Now for Christmas, Music Authority Night at Rosati's, and a 2015 Flashback

The Importance of Watching Others Perform
If you're a performer, you probably remember your first time on stage.  The nerves as you wait in the dark wings, about to step on stage.  The thrill of finding out you got the part.  The exhilaration of applause.

I remember my first part.  It was a Christmas play.  I was five years old and I had one whole sentence.  I'll never forget what it felt like.  I'll also never completely shake the nerves that happen, to this day, right before I walk onto the stage.

Live performance inspires.  It shares music and story with the audience.  Whether you are on stage or in the audience, you go home humming a new tune or imagining a new story.

If you don't have a student in the performance on Friday, you should still go to the show.  Seeing other performers on stage will inspire your young performer.  It might give them the courage to sign up next time.

If performance isn't in your future, you'll get an evening of entertainment.  We'll take you on a spooky (but not scary) journey of music.  You'll hear songs you probably haven't thought about in a long time and you'll experience the joy on performers faces as they do what they love and overcome fear.

And, perhaps most important, you'll be the most important person of the night.  Performers need an audience.  They need the applause, the laughter, and the cheers.  You, the members of the audience, are what gives life to a show.  We need you!

We hope to see you on Friday.  We hope even more to share the stage with you in the future.  It's going to be a great show!

Shake Off the Cobwebs; Parlor Size Guitars; Bret Dorton, Summer Camp; and Perfect Blend

Shake Off the Cobwebs
I've talked to so many parents who remember the days when they took piano or guitar lessons.  Sometimes, the conversations are about the "old fashioned" piano teacher who took the fun out of playing.  More often, parents are reminiscent of the fun times and lament there not being enough time in life to continue playing.

Why isn't there enough time?

Shake off the cobwebs and drag that old guitar out of the closet.  Spend a few minutes at your child's piano.  Time isn't going to slow down; now is better than later to remember the feel of an instrument in your hands!

Studies show that adults who engage in music making have lower stress and better memories.  Making music engages both sides of the brain.

A Stanford study shows that making music engages the parts of our brain that are involved in paying attention, making predictions, and updating events in our memory.  Many Alzheimer's studies show that music therapy can have positive impacts on patients.

As adults, we can find a lot of reasons not to take time for ourselves.  Don't forget, you're important, too!  Taking care of yourself now is taking care of your family and your future.

Are you waiting around Music Authority for thirty minutes for your kids?  How about taking a lesson at the same time?  You might be surprised by how much thirty minutes a week can change your life!

I hope everyone has a Happy Halloween this week!  (My favorite holiday.)  Music Authority will be closing at 6:30 on Thursday.  Be safe, have fun, and don't be too scary!

Parlor Size Guitars

What is a parlor size guitar?  It's a guitar with a smaller body - making it easier to play for small hands and musicians with smaller stature.  Women and children, who often find full size dreadnought acoustic guitars uncomfortable to play, will often be more successful with a parlor guitar like this Yamaha CSF1M.

Teacher Spotlight: Bret Dorton

Bret Dorton, seen here rehearsing with Teacher Band, attended the Atlanta Institute of Music.  His musical tastes run from ABBA to Van Halen and everything in between.  He's been in the studio four times and has two professional albums, Second Glance and Iron Lace, which garnered air play.

Bret is now adding Saturdays to his teaching schedule.  Call Music Authority to book a time with Bret today!

The Any Soldier Project; Effects Pedals make exciting Stocking Stuffers; Yancey Dahlberg; Sleigh Ride

The Any Solider Project
Many of you have heard about the Any Soldier project in the last few weeks.  This initiative, the largest service project the Music Authority Roadies participates in all year, delivers care packages to Georgia based military stationed overseas during the holidays.

In the last few years, Music Authority has shipped over seventy boxes each year  These boxes are filled with snacks, games, and hygiene products that are sometimes hard to come by when stationed in remote areas.

A card, colored by Music Authority students, and a letter from the Roadies are included in each box.

If you know of a friend or family member who is stationed overseas that you'd like the Roadies to send a package to, you can give that contact information to the front desk.

To help out with the project, cash donations (or checks made to the Music Authority Roadies) can be left at the front desk.  This will help with shipping.

A box for item donations is on the sales floor.  The most requested items are: beef jerky, instant coffee, drink packets (the kind you put in water bottles), chap stick, soap and other hygiene products, protein bars.  No chocolate or home made items, please.

The Practice Problem, ESP EC Guitars, Meet the Instructor: AJ Hirsch, Fright Festival

The Practice Problem
The number one complain when a parent starts considering dropping a student from lessons is almost always practice.  "My child won't practice unless I badger them."

Usually, once we begin a conversation about practicing, I hear this: "Thirty minutes is just such a long time to get them to focus."

That's right, in today's world, thirty minutes is a lifetime to young students.

Consider this: an average YouTube video is a little over four minutes.  That's seven YouTube videos in thirty minutes.

When I was young, expecting thirty minutes of practice at one time was normal.  But, I'm not that young any more and a lot has changed in what we know about education.  Our lifestyles are different.  Our attention span has changed.

Instead of a thirty minute practice time, research now shows that "playing" (instead of practicing) more frequently for shorter periods of time will garner faster results.  It gives muscles less time to "forget" the new skill and the brain more frequent reminders of material.

The sweet spot for practice is the same number of minutes as your students age.  Yes, if your young pianist is five, about five minutes is how long they should practice - twice each day.  If you can get your child to sit at their instrument once in the morning and once in the evening (or once after school and once before bed if you have an early bus), you will see better progress than if you force thirty minutes after school.

To most of us, finding five, ten, or twelve minutes to sit down with our children is much more manageable than a full thirty minute time block.  And, especially with the young ones, sit with them.  Ask them to show you what they're learning.  Make practicing time you spend together.

Before you drop lessons because your student isn't practicing, ask yourself - is the practice I'm expecting reasonable?  Or can we make adjustments that fit better for today's lifestyle?

The Importance of a Tribe; Shop Early for the Holidays; September Student of the Month; Holiday Concert Registration

The Importance of a Tribe
Helen Keller said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

Being an artist is hard.  Whether you're a musician or a photographer, you put yourself out there every time you show your talents to the world.  It can be stressful.  It can be terrifying.  And it can be the most fulfilling thing you'll ever do.

Performing will build self-confidence and grow self-esteem; especially when a performer has a group of their peers to cheer them on, to encourage them, and to help build a positive attitude.  Teachers and adults can encourage students and affirm how well they're doing; but hearing it from their friends is more powerful.

Music is not a zero sum game.  There are no winner or losers.  There isn't a certain number of points that are given out at the end of the game.  Everyone can win; everyone can go as far as they want if they're willing to work hard enough.  Supporting your peers won't lessen your ability to succeed.  Musicians who are able to be a team player will have a better chance of success than ones who aren't.

The beauty of Music Authority Family is that any young performer who wants it has a built in support team.  Come play music with us; we'll follow you on social media, cheer you on when you play, and come out to your gigs when we can.  Support us and we support you - be part of our tribe.

The Music Authority tribe extends past graduation.  Our former students have songs with radio play.  They're on national tours and playing in local churches.  They're working at and pursuing jobs in other parts of the industry.  These members of our tribe are still cheering for you.

Last weekend, while unloading gear to play at the Sandy Springs Heritage festival, a parent is surprised when a man she's never met before asks her if she's part of Music Authority and are Melissa and Andrew here.  After a moment of being taken aback, she remembered she was wearing a Music Authority Family shirt.  The man she was talking to was a member of one of the first All Star Music Authority bands - one that played at one of the the last shows to be held at Lanierland Music Park.

(You know that sign in front of Lanierland Park in the north part of the county?  It used to be a music venue for bands like The Oak Ridge Boys and Loretta Lynn.  They still have a Facebook page if you'd like to see what kind of music used to happen in Forsyth County.)

I learned as I went through photography school that having a group of other artists who understand what I was going through was paramount to my state of mind.  The social activities and philanthropic projects the Roadies sponsor are there to help build that sense of support - to help students and families find the things they have in common and encourage the students to support each other.

Being part of a large tribe is powerful.  Not only does it give a musician a built in audience, but it also gives them friends who understand their fears, they successes, and their struggles.

I'll end this article with a quote from Napoleon Hill.  "It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed."

We're glad you're part of our tribe, the Music Authority Family.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - September 24, 2019

Social Media Madness; Yamaha Revstar; Sandy Springs Heritage Festival; and Acoustic Nights

Social Media Madness
Many parents don't want their young students on social media.  Completely understandable.

But as students begin to build musical careers, social media becomes important.  No matter what artistic field you're in, you need to connect to your audience.

All of Music Authority's Rock Ensembles have Instagram accounts - run by their members.  Under the safety of Lauren Isenberg's leadership, the bands post, promote, and engage with other musicians.

Learning the social media game isn't easy.  My author's persona has her own Instagram (@anne.schlea), Facebook (Anne Schlea), and webpage.  I've had to build her presence one fan at a time.  It's hard work and takes time.

We encourage students in our band programs to utilize social media to invite friends and family to gigs; to connect to other bands; and to build a fan base.  We closely monitor the interactions and make sure safe skills are being developed.

Our goal is to give young musicians a foundation for their future careers as they grow.  We also believe that if mistakes are made under the umbrella of Music Authority, that they are safer learning experiences.  Students who post have guidelines and set schedules to make sure they're posting regularly.  We follow up, talk about what's working and what's not, and guide their learning.

We understand that many parents do not want their children on social media.  That's commendable and we support you.  We'll never ask students to go against the rules their parents have set for social media.

What we WILL do is give students a safe place to start learning about professionalism in social media.

If you're interested in learning more, Music Authority will be hosting a Social Media for Parents class on Saturday, October 19 at 11am.  For more information, see the front desk.
