Music Authority Family Newsletter - August 27, 2019

Off to College; Guitar Repair; Hotel Shampoo?; Big Hair at the Fair

UPDATE
Last summer, on the second day of Rock Camp, Jr., a parent stopped in to see me before camp.  From the conversation we had that morning, I learned camp was something of a last ditch effort to engage her son who'd been struggling with guitar.  He'd done a Spring Show, but that had been a tough experience.  He wasn't connecting with his instrument, not practicing, and just wasn't thriving like his older brother was.  He was struggling, not just with guitar, but with other things as well.

At the end of the first day of camp, he comes home talking more than he had in a very long time.  He was excited, enjoyed his instructor, his song, and his band.  He practiced.  The next morning, he was ready to go - he didn't drag his feet, he wanted to get to camp.

Some days, we're just here doing our jobs.  We forget that each word, each smile, each cheer could be the encouragement a student needs.  Every interaction hands a student a seed - the seeds of confidence, encouragement, joy, fulfillment, hope.

As we continue our work, giving these young musicians new seeds each week, we water and feed the seeds we've already started.

And then, one day, we have a miracles.  We see kids who, barely a few years ago, had parents worried they may never see their child survive high school.  We see once young and shy musicians teaching others.  We see smiles from a once terrified singer.  We see kids with confidence, humility, integrity, and kindness.

We see the seeds that were planted so long ago starting to bloom.

We watched our 2019 graduates head off to college this week.  Samyu, Isadora, and Elizabeth to KSU.  Niki and Sebastian to Lanier Tech.  Rohan to Georgia State.  Jordan to Vancouver.  There are more.  They've all taken things they've learned here and applied themselves in ways we might not have imagined.

One student, who struggles with anxiety, found the courage to move several states away to attend the "right college" for her.

If your child is struggling, let us know.  Maybe we can work outside of the box; find a new solution; find new inspiration.  That's what we're here for.  Even if your student never pursues a career in music, they'll be able to take the confidence, self-esteem, and determination they learn here to apply elsewhere.

Stick around for the miracles at Music Authority.  Keep your eyes open, watch, and experience the joy and community we've built.  You never know when you might be a part of miracle.

The Roadies; Strung; Dawn Blair; and Big Hair at the Fair

What Are the Roadies?
If you're around Music Authority long enough, you'll hear about the Music Authority Roadies.  But what are they?  Simply put, they're the Parent Organization for Music Authority.

The Roadies are responsible for the service projects Music Authority takes part in.  We believe in being of service to the community - giving back to the community that comes to our concerts and supports us.

This year alone, the Roadies have delivered Easter Baskets to Meals By Grace; raised money for The Alzheimer's Association; they will be doing a service day at Bearfoot Ranch; a donation of ukuleles to Cumming Elementary will be happening once the shipment arrives; and starting in October, they'll be focusing on their Any Soldier project - sending care packages to local military stationed overseas during the holidays.

Aside from handling service projects, the Roadies leave appreciation gifts inside of teacher boxes each month and they host social events to encourage Music Authority Families to get to know each other.

If you want to know more about the Roadies, you can join their Facebook Group.  You can also leave your information at the front desk and we'll get you in touch.

Instructor Spotlight: Dawn Blair

Dawn, a native of Detroit, Michigan, loves teaching.  Her studio is filled with laughter, positive reinforcement, and happy students.  Her favorite food is pizza.

School Year Stress, Pearl Cajons; Perfect Blend; and Bearfoot Ranch

School Year Stress
It's the start of the school year.  Your daily schedule is changed, kids have to get up earlier, lunches need to get packed, and after school activities seem to move at break-neck speed.  Is anyone else feeling the stress?

Music doesn't have to be stressful.  As a matter of fact, music shouldn't be stressful.  Too often, we take the "everything else" of life and toss it on top of whatever is happening now.

I perform every week.  I have a ninety minute rehearsal every Thursday.  If I don't "turn off" work when I walk into rehearsal, I don't truly get out of that rehearsal what I need.  Then, when it's time to perform, I'm not truly enjoying what I love - singing - because I'm too distracted by work.

Sometimes, I need to be reminded to turn off the outside world, too.

There are over 10,000 minutes in a week.  Can you take 30 of those minutes to let go of the world?  Stick in your earbuds and turn on your favorite song.  Try not to think about work for the entire length of the song.  Difficult, isn't it?

Did you play piano as a child?  Sit down, pull out an old piece of music, see how much you remember.  Don't have a piano still?  See if one of ours is open when your child is here for lessons.  We'll let you play around for thirty minutes.

Each year, on my personal Facebook page, I write a "Back to School" post.  This is mine from two years ago:

"As we all get ready to start back to school, a few thoughts...your teachers and administrators are human. Sometimes they're overwhelmed, sometimes they're tired. Some of them are dealing with life threatening illness. Some of them have children or parents who are struggling. Sometimes they'll forget something or make a mistake. They're human. And they're a human who's doing a job that's hard.

They're doing a job most of them feel is their higher calling. They love your children. Most of them will reply to emails in the middle of the night, or stay up late trying to figure out how to help your child succeed. They'll put in far more hours than any time card will show. But they're human. So give them a little leeway. Tell them you appreciate them. And try to give them the benefit of the doubt. They're human and often have inhuman things expected of them. On behalf of my teaching staff, have an incredible school year!"

Pearl Cajon

What is a cajon?  It's a drum used frequently in open mics and acoustic gigs.

Players will use their hands, or brushes, when playing the cajon to mimic sounds made on a traditional drum set.  You'll see our Showcase Bands use cajons

Available at Music Authority.

Perfect Blend

Music Authority is excited to welcome Perfect Blend to the ensemble program!  Perfect Blend is a women's acapella ensemble.  We can't wait to see them perform in a concert soon!
Please follow Music Authority on Facebook; on Instagram @musicauthorityinc; and join the Music Authority Roadies Facebook group for informational articles and to keep up to date with the happenings at Music Authority.

Bearfoot Ranch Service Day

Music Authority believes in being of service to your community.  We try to teach our students the importance of giving back and leaving a positive mark on the world.

As part of that philosophy, the Music Authority Roadies (our parent's organization) sponsors several service opportunities each year. The Bearfoot Ranch service day allows us to help the ranch with project, cleaning up, and other needs.

Bearfoot Ranch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit equestrian center dedicated to providing therapeutic riding lessons and other riding activities in a safe, effective and compassionate environment.

More information and a sign up sheet is available at the front desk at Music Authority.

Fall Show rehearsals started this week - here's a look back at the finale from "It's My Pirate Ship" last spring.  (Minus the dialogue that happened in the middle of the song.)  We had a blast at that show - how will we out-do ourselves this year?

Singing and Dancing and Making People Happy

Singing, Dancing, and Making People Happy
Well, I have a dream too, but it’s about singing and dancing and making people happy. It’s the kind of dream that gets better the more people you share it with. And I found a whole group of friends who have the same dream, and that makes us sort of like a family. - Kermit the Frog (The Muppet Movie)

Last week, Andrew and I took a few days off before the start of the school year.  We have to sneak our vacations in the slow weeks between summer camp and the start of school; or in the early spring before the Spring Show, spring break, and the race of May starts.

One of the things we did on our vacation was to go see the 40th anniversary showing of The Muppet Movie.  (Side note: there were a lot of adult jokes in that movie I don't remember from when I was a kid.  Be warned before you watch the movie with your kids.  It's a lot like watching Loony Toons as an adult.)

Kermit's quote toward the end of the movie sums up Music Authority in a way I hadn't thought about before.

It's difficult for Andrew and I, sometimes, to be the owners.  We want to make music, inspire lives, and make people happy.  As owners, sometimes we have to be the person who says no.  Sometimes, when we're on vacation, we have to respond to emails or parents having a crisis.

While many people get to turn the cell phone off and hit the beach, we don't have that luxury.  Honestly, if we're out of the office and don't hear anything for twenty-four hours, we start to get suspicious.

But it's okay.  We found something else - something we didn't even know we were looking for.  We found a family that has the same dream we do - love of music, inspiration, and a drive to make the world happy through song.

You may be a family who only takes your private lessons.  That's okay.  You're still a part of our extended family.  Your student is still sharing their song with the rest of the world.

Or you might be the family who keeps asking when we're putting cots in the Backroom; we're there every day anyway.  We know your favorite foods (because we eat a lot of meals together) and that your student's entire school wardrobe is made up of Music Authority shirts.

Or, you might be one of the families who have gone as far down this path with us as we were meant to travel.  We might have parted ways, but your student's song still resonates through the halls.

It takes an orchestra to sing the song of music to the world.  Each musician who walks through Music Authority is part of our orchestra - no matter how big or small their part.

We're grateful to share this journey with you and we're honored to call you family.  It might not always be a smooth ride.  It might sometimes have tears and disappointments, but together we can accomplish more than we'll ever be able to accomplish alone.  Together, we can support each other's songs.

I'm glad you're on this journey with us.
