#BeyondtheMusic

Learning Beyond the Music
Beyond the music.  What do we mean when we say, beyond the music?  Is it just a creative hashtag to announce the newest member of the Music Authority Family of bands?

No.  For Music Authority, going beyond the music is a philosophy of teaching, leading, and growing our students.

Beyond the music means that we hope we're teaching our young musicians how to be better friends, scholars, and humans.

It happens when we encourage dress code from our bands and at our recitals - teaching young people that there are times when we need to dress appropriately for an experience or situation.

It happens when we ask our rock ensemble students to request a letter of recommendation from their teachers - learning the skill of self-advocating.  Building the confidence to ask for something on their own behalf.

It happens when we teach our older students how to be a leader in a Spring or Fall show band - how to be kind while giving instructions and answering questions, how to think of the whole group beyond their own instruments, and how to be patient with a younger student.

And it happens with every service project we support at Music Authority.  Through these, we're teaching students how to think of their community, we teaching about random acts of kindness, and we're teaching them to give of themselves to help others.

This is what #BeyondtheMusic means to Music Authority.

This week, five of our young musicians are starting on the path to lead, guide, and inspire others to live beyond the music.  They have bravely agreed to take up their instruments, to commit to a higher level of musicianship, and be ambassadors for the rest of the Music Authority Family.

This week, we would like to introduce you to Music Authority's Beyond.  Congratulations to the students who have reached out and accepted the challenge.  Congratulations to the members of the newest Music Authority Showcase Band, Music Authority's Beyond: Audrey Gilley, vocals; Thomas Visoso, guitar; Trevor Hall, guitar; Jackson DaSilva, bass; and Jackson Coppinger, drums.

Music Authority Family Newsletter - April 23, 2019

Challenging the Conventional

Challenging the Conventional
In #### (numbers removed to protect my high school graduation year), I was a senior in high school in a tiny town in Northwest Ohio.  I was going off to a college in the south (thanks to my dad's previous year job transfer to Atlanta) to study music education.  I was going to be a high school choir director and I was going to move back to Ohio and settle down where I was raised after college.

My dad was skeptical of this plan.  He seemed to think I was too ambitious.

Fast forward to the summer before my senior year of college.  I'd done some classroom observations in Floyd County, Georgia, where I was in college.  Private elementary.  Rural high school.  Inner city elementary.  All great kids.  And I hated every minute of it.  (There's a big problem when the student teacher wonders every morning if she's sick and running fever; maybe she should call in sick, she wouldn't want to get the kids sick...)

I went to a huge concert at Atlanta motor speedway.  About thirteen rows from the stage, I started to notice something.  There were a TON of jobs in the music world that had nothing to do with teaching school.  (Please note, I know a lot of school teachers and am lucky enough to call them friends.  I have more respect for you than I can put into words.  It wasn't for me.)

I went home from that concert with two things.  One was a sunburn that bordered on  second degree burn level.  (Not really, but I couldn't sit or lay down comfortably for days.)  The second was a new game plan for life - changing majors to what was an unheard of major at the time.  Music Business.  (This decision pre-dates many of the music business programs in colleges today.  I think I was the second person at my college to even entertain the program started by the head of the school of music.  Dr. Pethel was brilliant enough to see that schools were turning out thousands of music majors a year that could teach or do classical.  Classical was only 7% of a multi-billion dollar industry.  Thus a music business program was born at Berry College.)

When I called my parents to tell them I was changing majors (not a big change, just education to business keeping the music), my dad was very quiet for a long time.  I guess a parent doesn't want to get that call at the beginning of their child's final two semesters of college.  Then he said, "I won't say I told you so."

From that moment forward, I've never been on a paved path.  I interned at the Atlanta Opera (the best internship ever, it taught me that "people are just people").  At the time, I was the only person around who actually had education in BOTH music and business.  They were disappointed when I left them to start the path that led me to Music Authority.

When Music Authority was born and I went to my first trade show, I found out female guitar store owners didn't exist.  Back then the BC Rich Warlock girls and the Dean Guitar Girls wandered the trade floor selling guitars to - well, not me.  Most vendors thought I was just there with Andrew.  They were floored when I stepped into the conversation to ask about financing, marketability, profit margin, and specifics on design, build, and specs on acoustic guitars.

Just like I challenged the conventional by changing majors to something unheard of in college, I was challenging the conventions of our trade organization.

It's a lot different now.  There are so many more women doing what I do - the result of many women challenging the conventional.  No one thinks twice when I meet with a sales rep or guitar designer and Andrew doesn't.  No one wonders when I speak on behalf of the organization.  No one mistakes me for Andrew's secretary.

He's important.  He does jobs at Music Authority I can't.  (I don't care to know how to fix amplifiers, thank you.)  I don't mean to say he isn't just as important on this pirate ship called Music Authority that I am.  We just hold different jobs and different responsibilities.  If you want to build the perfect pedal board, he's your guy.

Challenging convention gave Music Authority a cutting edge educational program that other places are replicating.  (What's the saying, someone copying you is the best compliment they can give?)

Challenging convention made Music Authority what we are; it made us what you are a part of.

I was told once I could never make a living out of music.  Well, Music Authority Family, welcome to the house that music built.

The History of Music Authority's Band Program

The History of Music Authority's Band Program
Many of you have noticed posts and videos over the last few weeks remembering Rise, Music Authority's first showcase band.  As the auditions of Music Authority's newest band, Beyond, draw closer, we wanted to take a look back and remember everything Rise has done to create a foundation for today.

Rise was born on March 30, 2014.  It was the first Sunday of Spring Break when five young musicians were given the opportunity to join Music Authority's first Showcase Band.  The band didn't have a name yet, all we had was a concept - a band that had five of the best young musicians on Music Authority's roster.  We didn't even have a name for the band.

That band, made up of Sydney Cameron, Jake Lanni, Drey Woodson, Harrison Block, and Brayden Suddth, started the magic that later became the Music Authority Rock Ensemble program.  Meeting on Sunday afternoons, the young musicians learned classic rocks songs.

Brayden Sudduth came up with the name Rise, something borrowed from a favorite album of the time.

It was at the June Rock Camp, 2014, that Rise was introduced to the world.  Eclipse (originally called Treble) followed them later that year.  A year later, in 2015, the Junior Bands, Unveiled and Fearless started, followed by Transcend, Revolution, and finally, Tribute.

We learned a lot from Rise.  Sometimes, we wish we could go back in time and apologize for some of the learning.  We were figuring things out right along with them, learning by trial and error how to run a successful band program when no one else had a program quite like ours.  In the end, Rise paved a path for so many others.

Under the long-time leadership of Brayden Sudduth and Jake Lanni, Rise came to embody professionalism, a positive attitude, and musical excellence.  Brayden and Jake stayed with Rise until their graduation in 2017.  The band folded shortly after and has been on hiatus since.

When it became time to add a second Showcase Band back into the Music Authority program, it was Brayden and Jake's decision to retire Rise permanently.  The memories and experiences the members of that band had will last them a lifetime.  It is time to pass the torch to a new, younger group of up and coming musicians.

Music Authority will forever be grateful for the years Rise gave to us.  We will be grateful for the thirteen young musicians who were part of the program.

Thank you, Rise, for being a bright star.  Thank you for inspiring the young musicians behind you.  Thank you for teaching us how to be leaders, thank you for dignity, commitment, and your musicianship.  Because of you, students today have a path to follow and a dream to aspire to.  You will forever be part of our history and our legacy.

Rise will be officially retired on July 12, 2019, at the beginning of the second Rock Camp concert of the summer.  It seems fitting as their first performance was at a Rock Camp show.

New Dean bass guitars arrived in a variety of colors on April 12!  Have your student learn a new instrument over the summer!  (The best way to get more stage time is to learn bass; MA's performance programs are always looking for more bass players!)

Instructor Spotlight: Matthew Luce

Versed in all things theatrical, Matthew has been acting in plays and musicals throughout the Atlanta metro area for over 10 years.  After realizing his passion for the performing arts, he attended Reinhardt University and graduated cum laude in 2016 with a BFA in Music Theatre.

Matthew believes music is an art accessible to all, and strives to bring this gift to anyone willing to learn. His overall ideology is "the music begins where the words fail to express emotion."

Rock Camp, Jr. - More Spaces Available

Summer camp at Music Authority is filling up!  Rock Camp, Jr. has been so popular that we've decided to open additional spots.

We are extending our maximum capacity for Rock Camp Jr. from 12 students to 20 by adding Lauren Isenberg as a second instructor.

Rock Camp, Jr. is a fun opportunity for your student to try out different instruments, learn about music, and play in a band with little or no experience.

Sign up your 5-10 year old today!
