Singing and Dancing and Making People Happy

Singing, Dancing, and Making People Happy
Well, I have a dream too, but it’s about singing and dancing and making people happy. It’s the kind of dream that gets better the more people you share it with. And I found a whole group of friends who have the same dream, and that makes us sort of like a family. - Kermit the Frog (The Muppet Movie)

Last week, Andrew and I took a few days off before the start of the school year.  We have to sneak our vacations in the slow weeks between summer camp and the start of school; or in the early spring before the Spring Show, spring break, and the race of May starts.

One of the things we did on our vacation was to go see the 40th anniversary showing of The Muppet Movie.  (Side note: there were a lot of adult jokes in that movie I don't remember from when I was a kid.  Be warned before you watch the movie with your kids.  It's a lot like watching Loony Toons as an adult.)

Kermit's quote toward the end of the movie sums up Music Authority in a way I hadn't thought about before.

It's difficult for Andrew and I, sometimes, to be the owners.  We want to make music, inspire lives, and make people happy.  As owners, sometimes we have to be the person who says no.  Sometimes, when we're on vacation, we have to respond to emails or parents having a crisis.

While many people get to turn the cell phone off and hit the beach, we don't have that luxury.  Honestly, if we're out of the office and don't hear anything for twenty-four hours, we start to get suspicious.

But it's okay.  We found something else - something we didn't even know we were looking for.  We found a family that has the same dream we do - love of music, inspiration, and a drive to make the world happy through song.

You may be a family who only takes your private lessons.  That's okay.  You're still a part of our extended family.  Your student is still sharing their song with the rest of the world.

Or you might be the family who keeps asking when we're putting cots in the Backroom; we're there every day anyway.  We know your favorite foods (because we eat a lot of meals together) and that your student's entire school wardrobe is made up of Music Authority shirts.

Or, you might be one of the families who have gone as far down this path with us as we were meant to travel.  We might have parted ways, but your student's song still resonates through the halls.

It takes an orchestra to sing the song of music to the world.  Each musician who walks through Music Authority is part of our orchestra - no matter how big or small their part.

We're grateful to share this journey with you and we're honored to call you family.  It might not always be a smooth ride.  It might sometimes have tears and disappointments, but together we can accomplish more than we'll ever be able to accomplish alone.  Together, we can support each other's songs.

I'm glad you're on this journey with us.

Welcome to "Behind the Desk."  Check out what's happening on Music Authority's YouTube channel - a weekly interview with a part of Music Authority's staff, a student, or a local artist.  Last week, we featured instructor Mitchell Auger.  Take a look and see what he had to say about college, studying, and Appalachian State.
