The Summer of Miracles

On the second day of Rock Camp, Jr., a parent stopped in to see me before camp.  From the conversation we had that morning, I learned camp was something of a last ditch effort to engage her son who'd been struggling with guitar.  He'd done a Spring Show, but that had been a tough experience.  He wasn't connecting with his instrument, not practicing, and just wasn't thriving like his older brother was.  He was struggling, not just with guitar, but with other things as well.

Cue Rock Camp, Jr.  The first day, he comes home talking more than he had in a very long time.  He was excited, enjoyed his instructor, his song, and his band.  He practiced.  The next morning, he was ready to go - he didn't drag his feet, he wanted to get to camp.

The conversation was humbling.

Some days, we're just here doing our jobs.  We forget that each word, each smile, each cheer could be the encouragement a student needs.  Every interaction hands a student a seed - the seeds of confidence, encouragement, joy, fulfillment, hope.

As we continue our work, giving these young musicians new seeds each week, we water and feed the seeds we've already started.

And then, one day, we have a summer of miracles.  We see kids who, barely a few years ago, had parents worried they may never see their child survive high school.  We see once young and shy musicians teaching others.  We see smiles from a once terrified singer.  We see kids with confidence, humility, integrity, and kindness.

We see the seeds that were planted so long ago starting to bloom.

Christian Strandquist, heading off to Belmonte this month, was once a quiet kid who didn't stand out from the crowd (the photo above is of me giving him is final Rock Camp pin - sniff, sniff).  When Lauren Isenberg, Music Authority's newest instructor, auditioned for Eclipse, I didn't know who she was.  But someone planted a seed and one day, that seed bloomed - forcing them to step beyond their comfort zone.

Stick around for the miracles at Music Authority.  Keep your eyes open, watch, and experience the joy and community we've built.  You never know when you might be a part of miracle.

Our summer camps were full and packed with fun, friendship, and great music.

Some of our kids think this song from Rock Camp Session 2 should be the new Music Authority theme song.  What do you think?

Sign Up for Lessons with Mitch Pew, guitar instructor!

Music Authority instructor Mitch Pew - Guitar:

Hi, my name is Mitch and I am a guitar instructor based out of Marietta, GA. I went to school at the Atlanta Institute of Music to further my education on theory as well as improve and diversify my playing. I love playing music because it can evoke all of the feelings that you cannot express in words and gives you  a way to create those feelings in a musical form. I also really enjoy teaching and watching my students grow and become better musicians and people. I grew up in a small town in Ohio that did not have much art or music around so I was pretty much forced to be a self taught musician until I decided to move to Atlanta. My favorite food is any sort of Thai food and my favorite music varies day to day but I am very much into Progressive Rock music.

Music Authority is such a productive organization because they always come up with different activities for musically-inclined people who desire to be part of their group. How I wish I live near their area so I could join them too! By the way, I will tell my cousin that you will having a workshop with Brandon Faulkner. She's a huge fan of Brandon is I assume that she is interested to learn from the expert. By the way, keep up the good job!
