Music Authority Family Newsletter - December 3, 2019

Catching Up with Christian Strandquist
Music Authority alumni Christian Strandquist stopped by over Thanksgiving weekend to say hi and catch up.  I took the opportunity to ask him about school, his experience at Belmont, and the most important thing he learned while at Music Authority.

Christian, in his second year at Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee, is studying Music Business with a Production Emphasis.  Looking back, he says he wishes he wold have been more relaxed his Freshman year.  He missed out on a lot because he was so focused on "not failing out" that he didn't do a lot of social things that first semester.

Now that he's more settled and comfortable in his classes, he finding a balance between school work and social activities.  "Networking is so important," Christian says.  "You can meet anyone at Belmont."

He admits it's difficult at first to walk up to a stranger and introduce yourself.  Once you realize everyone else is there for the same reason, it gets easier.  "Don't think you're above anyone," he says.  You never know where a new connection might take you.  "A good network makes the difference in success."

When asked what his goal is for the future, Christian says he wants to have a solid network that will open up options for jobs.  Rather than focus on one professional goal - say working at a publishing firm - he wants to make sure he knows people doing a lot of different jobs because you never know where you might end up.

Finally, I asked Christian what the most important thing he learned at Music Authority was.  He said, "It's something Andrew used to say, be a yes man."

Whenever possible, Christian says yes to everyone.  Saying yes to help his publishing professor carry books to his car earned him a mentor and a pass to the NAMM Show in Nashville.  Saying yes to another student, who happened to be and older student who returned to college after spending time on the road, gave Christian the opportunity to observe that student working on his next album in the recording studio.

We're always happy to catch up with students when they're back in town from college.  It sounds like Christian is making strides toward an incredible professional career.  We can't wait to see what he accomplishes next!
