Music Authority Family Newsletter - February 25

Music is Not a Zero Sum Game
As I'm working on social media, I frequently find where people (of all ages) post unnecessarily mean things about performers.  Most recently, someone posted a critical post about our Guitar Ensemble's performance of Bach at a recent concert.  The post, now gone, implied it was embarrassing for a group of guitarist to hack up a classical song that any decent pianist could perform.

I replied to the post that we were proud of guitar ensemble, just as we are of all our 640 students, and we thought the performance was awesome.

What the poster, a musician who happens to be a classical pianist, forgot is this: music is not a zero sum game.  Just because I win doesn't mean you lose.

We do our best at Music Authority to teach our students to be supportive of all other musicians.  There's never a good reason to be mean or hurtful to someone who is pouring their soul into their performance.  If their art isn't something you enjoy, move on.

Putting yourself out there on stage is tough enough for most of us.  The courage it takes to step on stage alone should be applauded.  To have someone that is simply a bully tear you down is uncalled for.

Besides, you never know who you're going to see later in life at another gig.  (I ran into a former teacher at a show I sang on Sunday.)

The moral of the story?  Be kind.  Be supportive.  Be the musician everyone wants to play with because you're thoughtful and prepared.

(And if you want to see that awesome Guitar Ensemble performance, it's posted to Music Authority's Facebook site.)

Adult Rock Camp

Call adult musicians!  Time gets away from us.  We've always wanted to be in a band, but life, jobs, kids, all happen and suddenly its been years since we picked up the guitar.

Now's your chance to change that.  The committment?  Four Saturdays in June (3:30 - 5:30) and one show on Sunday, June 28.

Saturdays in June.
Cost: $275

Weather is Brutal on Guitars

Have you noticed your guitar buzzing?  (Buzzing is when the strings vibrate against the frets and causes a "rattle.")  Or has it gotten more difficult to play, the strings pulling away from the neck?

Guitars are made of wood, which shifts and warps with changes in weather.  Having a set up on your guitar once every 6-8 months will keep your guitar in top playing condition, fix any play-ability issues, and extend the life of your instrument.

Bring yours in to Music Authority today to have one of our expert repair technicians check it out.

Our fall show is an opportunity to honor our graduating band program seniors.  After performing with their fellow students, they join our alumni on stage for their first performance as alumni.  Last year's graduating class was huge.  This year, we'll be celebrating with Audrey Gilley of Beyond as she becomes alumni on March 13 at American Legacy.
