Music Authority Family Newsletter - January 21,2020

Communication is the Key
What's the most difficult thing to teach a band full of teenagers?  It isn't how to play notes, how to look interested on stage, or even how to write a song.  The hardest part is teaching communication.

We all have our own language - a language we develop as we grow up, based on our experiences and our home of origin.  I had a college professor explain it like this - if you've never seen a baby shark in the waters off of South Georgia, you'll never understand what I mean when I say, as blue as a baby shark.

Sometimes, Eclipse spends most of their rehearsal day learning how to communicate better.

All too frequently, we go through life speaking our own language and blaming others if they don't understand.  Or we feel silly asking what someone means, so we keep our mouths shut and end up upset about something that could have been avoided.

A teacher reminded me this week that we're all on this Music Authority ship together. We all want our students to be successful.  He also reminded me that as I bulldoze through my day, I don't always stop to make sure someone understands what I mean.  That sometimes, "that song is too hard" really means, "that student isn't ready for this challenge yet, lets come back to this in a few months when they have more practice under their belts."

If you're confused, please don't be afraid to ask a question.  We want you to understand.  We want you to be on this journey with us and we're more than happy to sit down, talk through your concerns and questions, and make sure we're all on the same page and moving in the same direction.

Adult Rock Camp?

Each year, a few adults ask if we would do a summer Rock Camp for adults.  This year, we're going to see if we can make that happen!  If you're an adult who would be interested in doing a Rock Camp, reach out to Natalie, Ana, or Melissa.  Let's see if we can make this happen!
